I have read some horror stories on here in recent months about the shortage of available rental cars and of people showing up to claim their reservation only to have no cars available. Taking a trip next month and wondering how big an issue this really is. Is it really that prevalent? I’d hate to get to my destination airport and be stuck without a car.

ETA: Will be flying into MSP if anyone has specific experience there.

I’ve rented cars 5 times this year. Prices are very high, but vehicle availability hasn’t been an issue. My trips all have been to Denver International.

Depends on airport. I fly into SAV two or three times a month and have had problems every time since the beginning of the year. CLT is hit and miss. ATL not so much. Smaller airports seem to be worse.

yes prices are high
for now I think it’s wise to bite the bullet and pay the premium for something other than the cheapest available vehicle

this too shall pass

I don't mind paying higher prices, I just want to know my car will be there waiting for me when I get to my destination.

Look into prepaying.

We had no issues picking up our rental car in Jackson Hole last week. Made the reservation in January though.

I'm going to Glacier Natl Park soon and have a rental reserved months ago, but on the travel forums folks are panicking because they don't. As someone else said, check Turo, where you rent someone's personal car. Also, car dealerships are renting more now.

Looking at car rentals for an upcoming vacation and 200 a day is the cheapest I can find.

Using tuaro I'm looking at more like 100 a day

Make sure you check the mileage costs when looking at Turo. Major car rental firms usually include unlimited mileage, but it's less common on Turo.

We decided to postpone our trip to Anchorage because nobody had rentals available at the end of August. We had heard that many places were overselling and folks showed up with nothing there, but it seems they are cutting back on that.

I only wanted a car for 3 days but 700+ is not what I want to pay for a crappy Toyota

Yeah, my girls and I decided to take a 3 day weekend trip to Denver over Father's Day weekend-- catch a Rockies game, hike in the mountains a bit, go see Boulder.

Rental car was the biggest issue with the trip. The flight is direct and very cheap; the hotel is reasonable and earns points, but rental car prices were (are) outlandish. It's $115 a day for an econobox Kia Rio or Ford Eco Sport, and went upwards from there. With taxes and such, rental cost was going to be over $300 for just two days of time. Although I could easily afford it, the principle of the thing bugged me-- no WAY did I want to spend that much. My younger daughter came through with an interesting solution-- rent a pick-up from U-Haul, $19.95 a day (plus mileage):

I thought it was a brilliant idea, and didn't even mind the free advertising aspect for such a low cost. I actually did reserve one, but after calculating the mileage (over 200 miles at 69 cents/mile) and thinking about the three of us on a bench seat for three days, I was able to find a better deal via that new TURO app, which is kind of like AirBNB for cars. I scored a 2020 Kia AWD Sportage for only $135 total, which is actually less than what the U-Haul was going to be.

Thing is, this is DENVER, a big metro area with lots people and thus more Turo operators. Places Like Jackson Hole are not going to have that many Turo entrepreneurs.

Same here. Flying into FCA. Have a reservation, but still a little worried. Pretty much SOL if we get there and they give me the run around...
