How long until Southwest and United follow suit? I’m hoping they do, because its going to be tough to retain both this year.

quote:

Delta SkyMiles Medallion Members will be able to enjoy their Status through Jan. 31, 2023, in addition to other extensions designed to give the airline’s most loyal customers more flexibility as travel resumes.

The news was shared by Delta CEO Ed Bastian in a letter to SkyMiles Members Tuesday, which also outlined actions, resources and policies the airline is putting in place to address challenges customers have been facing as they return to travel. Those measures include giving those booked in Basic Economy the ability to make changes to their flights for travel occurring through Dec. 31, 2021, to help reduce calls to Reservations. Later this week, those customers will be able to manage their trips on delta.com and via the Fly Delta app.

Medallion Members who are currently earning Status by traveling in 2021 will receive elevated benefits for the 2022 Medallion Year. The global carrier is also extending the ability for Award Travel on Delta to count toward Status through Dec. 31, 2022. And all SkyMiles Members will continue to earn at an accelerated rate on most tickets through Dec. 31, 2021.

“After an unprecedented year, we are thrilled to see so many of our loyal Members back in the skies and reuniting with loved ones,” said Dwight James, S.V.P. of Customer Engagement & Loyalty and CEO of Delta Vacations. “However, we know traveling looks different than it did before the pandemic. No matter what your situation has been throughout the past year, we want to do all we can to make your return to travel seamless and rewarding, with the assurance that Delta is listening and responding to take care of you every step of the way.”

I earned Companion Pass on Southwest for 2020 and 2021. And my kid turned 2 during 2020 (masks).

That went over well

Really hoping for SW to do the same, especially given how customer friendly they traditionally are. I'm a huge fan and have shown many the light but the horror stories I've heard with them lately are concerning (fortunately not my flights). I know plenty of people who haven't been able to use their CP earned early in 2020.

It would be nice. My kid being grounded effectively grounds me, but I don't expect them to see it that way. We flew a few times during the pandemic before he turned two.

I raised some hell and got some money back, but got screwed a little too, in my view. Long story short, booked flights for him pre-mask mandate and when canceled because a 2 year old can't wear a mask the system gave me the old expiration date and not the 2022. Thought that was kinda shitty, asked for a exception just for his travel credit, didn't get it. Probably got about $500 free money from me. At least I argued another $500 back to me.

Well word was they were going away in Sept, but that is almost certain to not happen thanks to CDC yesterday.

I’ve had companion for 3yrs now and can earn it by getting a credit card this year, but would rather them just carry over one more year. I’m at like 50k points thus far this year.

Ya, I booked the Hyatt suite in Cancun on points for a post pregnancy trip in January that I will have to cancel if they extend, among other considerations like shielding my son from this hellscape.

It's incredibly frustrating as we are not driving distance to family. It's a shitty situation.

In all honesty, I don’t see any way the United and SW don’t do something…

SW will likely be the last to make the decision, as they were this last go around. After Delta and United made the call, I was blowing up SW asking if they were going to extend and got the generic “were looking at it” and it took them like 2 months to make their decision to extend.

Hopefully. I earned my companion pass the same week that everything shut down in 2020. Have not been able to use it nearly as much as I hoped.

We will see a great divide among customers who feel grateful and customers who feel entitled.

I’m the latter… You bet your arse I feel entitled to an extension with how much $$$ I’ve put into these airlines and hotels.

There's a great post on The Points Guy with a frequent flyer absolutely livid that someone could buy status for next year through airline credit card spend only. It was kinda sad how much his identity rides on it.

I received my email from United last Friday extending to the end of Jan 2023. Thought odd given that we were only halfway thru 2021. But, now makes sense hearing about Delta extension.

What level are you? Haven’t seen that with United yet… Wonder if they are sending by tiers

GS. Looks like it might be going out in tiers. Double checked and email did go out last Friday. Extension thru Jan 31, 2023.

Also, I hardly flew at all in 2021. So, I didn’t really do anything to earn extension. Seems to be that they are simply extending again as they did last year.

Damn, yeah, y’all are the most impacted with lack of international travel to get those massive amount of miles needed.
