Planning to go in October. It appears there are no vacancies inside the park. Any help is appreciated!

West Yellowstone at the northwest entrance or Gardiner at the north entrance. Both cool little towns.

long arse drive from there to Yosemite every day

We went a few months ago and got an AirBNB in Yosemite West, great area and close (30 minutes) from the Valley or Glacier Point.
Ours did not have AC, and it was 90 degrees some days. I wasn't aware of no AC until we went, so check that if that matters.

I always camped illegally in the boulders. Did it three separate times for a month each. Have to find a place to sleep without a headlight on, but as long as you work hard during the day sleeping is easy. Tried the woods, but mosquitos were terrible.

Park lodging gets books as soon as it opens up. Yosemite West is probably the closest you will get to the Valley.

Check back daily and multiple times throughout the day and you will probably get lucky. Cancellations happen and rooms open up. I booked rooms in Yosemite a few years ago a month or two before my arrival time by doing this. Stayed in wawona and Yosemite valley lodge by doing this, but also had opportunity to book in the ahwahnee if I’d have wanted.

Stay in the park. Check every day. Cancellations happen. Foresta or Yosemite west would be my choice

All the national parks filled fast this year. Barring cancellations it'll be tough for in-park lodging.
Have you looked in Wawona? "Technically" it's in the park. We stayed there a few years back. I just looked and VRBO has lots of houses/cabins to rent there. About a 45 minute drive to Yosemite Valley.

Sometimes you have to do just one day at a time rather than the whole stay and you can find a place.

I went back in June and stayed in a little town called Groveland. About a 25 to 30 minute drive to the entrance on that side. It was a neat little town and I enjoyed my stay there.

I've stayed at Hotel Charlotte in Groveland twice, enjoyed it both times. It may be not all that far from the Big Oak Flat entrance but it is still an hour or so from the Valley Floor to the best of my recollection so leave early lest you run into parking problems. If you'll be visiting the park for more that a day or three consider checking out Hetch Hetchy. You'll pass the road to Hetch Hetchy on your way to the entrance. HH is part of Yosemite National Park so there is a manned NPS entrance so you're still on the hook for Yosemite entrance fees.
