Trey Lance or Justin Fields

I am looking to pick one of these guys up as a high upside rookie to stash, hoping they will start in the first few weeks. I have Stafford as my starter, but wanted to get the boards take on who you would pick.

Take Fields cuz Lance will only play occasionally.

To throw one more variable in there, is Carson Wentz worth a pickup now that he looks like he will play in week 1? I got stuck at the end of a QB run and wound up with Stafford, who I think can be top 12, but I worry about his back holding up

This is really a tough call. I'm still stumped who I would go with. I want to stash on on my bench also.
Coach- Lance
WR help- push (Robinson/Mooney=Aiyuk/Samuel)
RB help- slight edge Fields (Montgomery/Williams/Cohen > Mostert/Sermon/Gallman)
TE help- Lance (Kittle>>>Kmet)
DEF help- push
rushing ability- push
arm- probably Fields
path to playing time (most important)- push
It's almost too close to call imo. Just depends who you think will make the move first to pull their veteran QB.
I would think Chicago would give Dalton a longer leash since he signed a 1 year deal.
I know one thing though. Zach Wilson will start week 1 and I don't think he will be a scrub either, especially under this new regime. Lot of people writing him off in fantasy because Jets.

I think it really comes down to who folds first, Dalton or Jimmie.

Lance will be a better fantasy QB

Lance has bigger upside with his rushing ability than Fields imo.

I think Justin Fields is a better real life player than Trey Lance, but for the 2021 fantasy season, the upside play is definitely Lance.
They are both freak athletes for the position, but Lance is the better (and more willing) runner.
Lance has a FAR better team around him from an offensive personnel standpoint. His pass catchers are better with Kittle/Deebo/Aiyuk. His offensive line is leaps and bounds better (8th in the NFL vs 31st in the NFL per Brandon Thorn's rankings).
And then we get into playcalling/coaching/organizational factors...I'm favoring the Niners with Shanahan over the Bears with Nagy every day of the week.
And if you're still not convinced, the Niners line up with this schedule down the season's stretch, when Lance will likely be playing:
Week 10 vs Rams
Week 11 at Jags
Week 12 vs Vikes
Week 13 at Seahawks
Week 14 at Bengals
Week 15 vs Falcons
Week 16 at Titans
Week 17 vs Texans

Good points. Didn't realize Chicago's offensive line was that bad.

The Leno release and subsequent Jenkins serious injury hurt them a lot.

I like Lance better as a player and his supporting cast. However, Fields probably has the easier route to starting. Niners could very well be content to ride Jimmy G all year and bring him in slowly for next year like the chiefs did with Mahomes. Then again Jimmy G is made of glass so that could also force him into the starting role.

You sure about that?
Yes, I'm sure. Garoppolo was named the starter a while back after the draft. They will insert Lance on some trick plays but there won't be too many. Lance will be on the bench most of the time, unless Garoppolo gets hurt, which is very likely cuz he's very fragile.

That's just Shanahan trying to be cute by keeping his opponents guessing. Trust me, Garoppolo is starting and Lance will be a good study from the bench this season. Garoppolo must put up some good numbers this season to get teams interested in him next year.

I’m gonna go ahead and tell you that the 49ers didn’t trade up all the way to 3 to not play Lance this season

The Niners will groom Lance for 1 year before they let him loose on the league. Even Mahomes sat for 1 year before going berserk on the NFL.
Bookmark this thread and let's revisit mid-season. I'm confident about this.

Be confident all you want. Moving up to go get the QB you want shows no faith in the current starter. Jimmy G isn’t going to be the starter the entire year. His leash is short.

You realize that everything you’re saying can be used as an argument for Justin Fields sitting as well? Andy Dalton is on a 1 year contract. Dalton has already been named the starter.
At the end of the day, rookie first round QBs usually play.

Shhh. Let him keep up the same rhetoric. It’ll make it that much better when Lance takes the job during the season
