Weird happenings at my polling place this morning

I got there around 9:15 PST. When I went in there were 4 people ahead of me, all Hispanic. I live in Los Angeles, so that's not unusual. The first person in line was a woman in her late 20's who had brought in her mail-in ballot and wanted to drop it off, but wanted to vote on one of the machines as well. The polling place jefe handled it well, telling her she could vote on the machine so long as she surrendered here mail-in ballot, which she did after a 2-3 minute discussion of voting rules. He voided her mail-in ballot, so no harm, no foul I suppose.
The next three guys in line, all in their mid 30's, wanted to vote, but their names were not found in the voter registry. All three were told no problem, and were given forms to fill out. They did, and they voted.
Anybody know what those forms were? They were sort of pink colored. I've been voting in the same neighborhood for 23 years and I've never seen that happen before.

Pretty sure they were provisional ballots.

They are held and counted, but not added to the total numbers right away. If the election is close enough to make a difference, they will dig into those and determine who was actually allowed to vote and who wasn't and then add them back in.

Those were Provisional Ballots. Saw the same thing when I voted in CA this morning

What would happen if she didn't tell the jefe that she had a mail-in ballot, voted on the machine, left and then came back to submit her mail-in ballot?

Weird happenings
So it wasn't so much "weird" as it was a function of your ignorance of California voting law, despite having lived there for decades? Does this make you question what else you might be ignorant of that should be common knowledge to you? Does this make YOU the weird one?

You really must be one seriously miserable person IRL.

provisional ballots. pretty much you walk into any voting station in the country and you can get a provisional ballot. then they check your deets with registration lists to see if your vote is valid.
my understanding is that provisional ballots are almost always discarded.

As others have posted, those were most likely provisional ballots.
Louisiana has the same process for persons who don't have a photo ID or if someone says he doesn't know which precinct he is supposed to vote at.

Nah, just open-minded. I've seen how certain you are of yourself on here, so it's not surprising to see you in total ignorance of a rather pedestrian aspect of the system.
Your thread title vaguely hints at sinister machinations (typical Trump "rigged" narrative) due to your literal ignorance. You chose to present that through the lens of "weirdness" - i.e. if it doesn't conform to the small subset of your personal knowledge/worldview, then it must be "weird".
This could be a good personal growth opportunity for you. It's a good day!

I voted in Lafayette today and something weird happened there too. This lady lives in Opelousas(she said so) but claimed her address to vote was here in Lafayette, she had a picture ID without her name or address on it, they took her word and looked up the name and address and asked her the address and she only knew the street name and not the number of the address, and they let her vote. I laughed it off but how the hell does something like that happen? I'm sure this kind of stuff happens all of the time elsewhere. And Trump will still win bigly and hopefully stop sh*t like that from happening.

And now the unravelling begins in earnest. Please update us as frequently as possible on your decaying mental state throughout the rest of the day- I'm going to savor every drop of your melt.
