You won't regret it. All the others pale in comparison

Chicago does shine when it comes to its top end restaurants: Girl and Goat, Spiaggia, Alinea, and so forth. These are some of the best restaurants in America. But that does not say anything about the general state of food in Chicago. Rich people get the best ingredients and the best chefs, so it's natural to have some of the best restaurants.
That's fair.

Ethnic cuisine (what does that term even mean?), one would expect, should be phenomenal. It is not. Again, with the sheer preponderance of ethnic restaurants one would expect excellence, but the end product is a reflection of the general apathy about good food within the populace who live in Chicago. Pilsen is an exception, with a number of world-class Mexican restaurants. But even there, I can find just as many excellent Hispanic restaurants on the Williams Blvd. corridor in Kenner, La. It is no where close to Houston in terms of Hispanic cuisine.
I would agree that Houston has a great Hispanic food scene, which is to be expected. Though I do not think this diminishes the quality of food you can get in Pilsen and Little Village (which you did not acknowledge), Chicago's largest Mexican-American neighborhood.
Chinatown has excellent options (i.e. Go 4 Food is one of my favorites) and Devon is home to a number of Indian restaurants and grocers. My girlfriend is half-Indian herself and really enjoys going up there.

Deep dish pizza? Again, another lackluster "contribution" from a city that cares more about catching up to New York's financial prowess than enjoying life. I will make a claim that at face value appears to be a preposterous, but in reality is true, and say New Orleans has better pizza than Chicago. It's true. The fact that a place like Connie's has been popular in the city for over 50 years is proof enough.
Will not disagree with your blurb about Hot Dogs, but not sure I've seen a soul, in the five years, I've lived here order / eat at Connie's. The most prevalent place I've seen their pizza is in the frozen food section of a grocery store.
If your preference is not deep dish, then Chicago is not the place to go. I would prefer a crispy, cracker-thin pizza over deep-dish, but there is little doubt, in my mind, that places like Pequod's, Lou Malnati's, and Art of Pizza make some of the best you'll find.
My parents live in Manhattan and I've lived in Chicago for the past five years. I suppose it's personal-taste, but I don't find anything pitiful about Chicago's food scene. Some of the best wings (i.e. Crisp, Birds Nest) I've had, for example, are both in Chicago.

My buddy had some shipped to his house in Columbus. We're eating it after the game on Saturday. We had Giordano's last Friday in Chicago. It was fine. I got a thin margerita pizza because I'm not a huge fan of the deep dish. I did have a bite of the table deep dish and it was good.

Lou Malnati's is top tier for the style - just be sure to order one with a butter crust like the Chicago Classic.
Pequod's is also solid. The pro tip here is to order a sausage pie with extra cheese and and extra sauce.

first two bites are great
after that it's just a gross waste of a meal
best food we had in Chicago last summer was in Chinatown
if I ever go back that's where I'm eating

pequods is my favorite.. but lou's is more convenient to me and is mighty fine itself.. have had the rest, but the first two mentioned have me covered when I need deep dish..

I've done the Pequod's, Lou's, Gino's trifecta and have to say that I just don't care for deep dish pizza because it's a sloppy mess to me. IMO, there's just so much awesome available in Chicago that I encourage seeking out something different. You asked for a recommendation though and of those, I'd say Pequod's was my favorite.
Where's runningTiger when you need him though? Did he go back to banland from that thread about the ultimate guide to Chicago or something? If so, I must've missed why the thread is gone after I went to sleep that night.

As someone who lives in Chicago, I wholeheartedly disagree.
We no longer live there, but I disagree too. Some of the best ethnic food in America, outside of NYC, lots of variety and most all of it very good.
Maybe he doesn't know what good food is.
That's probably what his problem is, so forget him.

r the purpose of eating are New York, DC, and New Orleans. Houston, Los Angeles, maybe Seattle or San Fran would be next in line.
Los Angeles deserves to be on the tier 1 level for dining. While we lag way behind NYC and Chicago in 3 star michellin world class type places, we more than make up for it with our ethnic cuisines.
Regarding Chicago pizza, didn't like geno's, giardanos was good, Lou malnatis butter crust is one of the 2 best pizzas I've ever had.
