Yup. Didn't wait at all.
I do agree that a soft ice chest would have been clutch.

Great event. BO and crew, excellent work, I know it's not easy to pull that off.
You get a great feeling knowing the money goes to such a great cause.
Food was great, and the creativity was enjoyable. Not sure if he posted but R2R ate the bacon donut. Fat arse.
Are the winners posted on here? I left before the announcements.

Even with the line issues, still had a great time yesterday. I really screwed up by not putting sunscreen on and I am paying for it today. Those Mechahopzillas and Hopitoulas caught up to me by the end of the night so I missed Pat Green.

Pictures from a few of the things I enjoyed during the judging yesterday.
I judged beans, whole hog, ribs, and porkpourri. Mostly everything was fantastic. Porkpourri was a really cool category and I was really impressed by the creativity from some of the teams.
Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to be a judge again next year!

Times Picayune article mostly about the porkpourri entries.

How was that corn dog? Looks good.

It had a lot of potential and I think it would have been excellent had it been presented to us a little faster and straight out of the oil. By the time it made it to us it was still warm but the crust had started to become soggy. I ended up pulling most of the crust off of mine and devouring the inside.
My favorite porkpourri at my table were the "cajun footballs" and next to the footballs in one of the pictures were these pork sandwiches on a donut. Had some type of raspberry glaze on them. They were delicious as well.

Looks awesome. How many judges were there?

The ice cream sandwich from Dinner Lab was pretty damn good I thought (and nutritious!

Each category had anywhere from 60-70 judges. There were 15 tables with at least 4, and sometimes 5, at each table.
I judged beans, ribs, whole hog, and porkpourri. Didn't do sauce or shoulder but I sampled several of the shoulder entries after they were judged.

How did you end up judging?
Posted on 3/30/14 at 10:08 pm to REG861
Won a contest. I was probably one of the few "amateur" judges. The rest of the judges were local food critics, some restaurant owners, and members from the Memphis Barbecue Network...which I'm now thinking about joining.
I gotta figure out how I'm gonna be a judge again next year. It's going to be tough to go back and be a "commoner" again!

Awesome pics. Would be fun to be a judge.
Overall I had a good time. It was a clusterfrick and there is no other way to describe it but so it goes as things grow. Heard a lot about the beer line but didnt drink so it didnt effect me.
Only question I have, why double up with teams on both sides of the "road"? Seems like last year was way more spread out and they utilized a lot more of the park.
I'll give this year a pass as the water was a big issue. Didn't have as fun as i've had before but will come back and enjoy contributing a great cause. Food as always was amazing.
just my .02 cents, but it would wise to figure out a way to better handle the crowds. I liken this to the Poboy festival in that people will stop going if it becomes to much of a cf and a headache.

yea, i agree. It's overwhelming trying to sort out which teams are which, and what is on the menu when the crowd is pushing you to move on.

My sentiments as well. I'm sure it was done that way because of all the standing water ? I hope so, and not that it was by design. Last year it was bordering on too spread out but after yesterday I'll take that over how cramped it was this go 'round.
Considering the nightmarish beer and ticket lines I kept hearing about I'm glad I had a Boss Hog ticket.
I didn't eat as much as I would have liked nor did I spend my eating time very wisely, TBH. Wish I would have gotten there by noon and just had some time to spend walking around checking out what people were offering. Once a bunch of douche bags show up start pulling you in different directions the food kind of gets lost in the shuffle.
From what i noticed looking at all the menus it seems like this year people really went over the top trying to "out-create" one another. Wasn't really interested in how many variations on pork dessert and/or fricking mac n cheese they had out there. Best things I had were simple things.. ribs, pulled pork.
And as O Brah mentioned, the donut was fricking terrible.

The critiques here are spot on, but luckily they are things we can fix.
In hindsight, it was stupid to place all those 10 x 10s on both sides of the track near Cap One stage. We did it as a way to make site smaller to address concerns from last year.
We were pretty ahead of the game until Friday's downpour began and it cause us not to be able to build out Boss Hog properly. And of course the mud issues.
Definitely need more ticket lines, will need more bars, booths that just sell say beer and not all beverage products, and probably just use one ticket. Again all very fixable. But the board definitely has some good feedback, so thanks for that.
Time to plan Charleston.

All things considered y'all did a great job. I really liked having live music on Friday too.

Agreed it was still a great event. Already looking forward to next year.
BO, what's Charleston details?

I'm assuming this was the case with the crowded entrance gate. At a minimum those booths that were on that side behind Christian Bros. near the entrance would have def. been able to be moved back off the path and spread out some of not for all of the water that they had behind there.
My friend was on one of those teams and their grill ended up basically under water Friday night.
They shared with a grill next to them, so it was all good other than some initial stress.
