My wife and I's anniversary is this weekend. I am looking a place to take her from Shreveport over to Monroe. We've done the 2 johns a few times, and yes, its great; but we want to try something different. Any suggestions?

Walkons is good.. but not for anniversary. I'd tear up some fried pickles.

in Shreveport:

Fat Calf - a little more casual upscale, but I think its quite good and a nice spot for an anniversary dinner

Mabry House - upscale and old school charm

Never actually ate there. Just used to party there when it was Rabbs.

I think it would be odd for me to take my wife there now

Food will be excellent at Parish in Monroe. It's upscale but not quiet.

It was excellent. Then it closed for a bit, then re-opened. I haven't been since then. Not sure if it's the same owners. If you used to party down at Rabbs like we did you'll be a bit sad if you look out back at the old stage and whatnot.

As far as Monroe options Parish has the best food. Genusa's and Warehouse the best typical anniversary atmosphere. But I went to
Parish last night for my anniversary and throughly enjoyed it.

If you are talking Shreveport upscale, either Zuzul, Fat Calf or Mabry House should be the first choice. From there you've got Superior Steakhouse/2 John's (steakhouse experience, opposite sides of the river).

Honestly, If you are looking for something nice and haven't been to any of those in the first group, I would go with either Zuzul or Fat Calf. Not just fantastic food, but both good bar staff and professional wait staff that know their menu. Put those two restaurants pretty anywhere and they would succeed.

Mabry same, decor is very dated which turns me off a bit, but longtime waitstaff and chef doesn't let the menu get stale.

Order a fish dish, if you like fish. If the soft shell crab is available, my partner said it was fantastic last night.

Ended up not getting the fish dish even though it looked really good. We both got Italian, which was good, but the fish looked awesome.

Appetizer: We got the hummus. It was good, but a little too smooth for me, they did add small tomatoes on top which made it better. I really liked the bread they brought out as well.
Dinner: I got the Veal Parm and my wife got the Gnocchi ( which is the reason we went there actually) The Veal, in spots, was a little tough, but overall was good. The Gnocchi was really good, no complaints there at all.
Drinks: I stuck the the old fashions. They make a good one there. I really enjoyed it. My wife got the special of the night, some type of strawberry bourbon drink. It was tart and good which it was supposed to be. The wife downed it quite quick haha. Overall I would give it a 7.5/10. I would definitely go back but I think I would want to try Cotton or somewhere else around the area if we drive back over that way.
