I can't get myself to like oatmeal. I've tried multiple times.

I never liked oatmeal either now I eat it pretty much every morning. I usually have Quaker weight control with dried fruit or fresh blueberries and a few walnuts. I add boiling water but use less than directions say, then I cover the bowl and let it sit for a few minutes. Texture comes out perfectly for me that way.

Now that's a breakfast. When I was in college, their was a coffee shop two doors down from my house. I would get pretty much this exact same breakfast

perfect breakfast IMO. I got spoiled on jewish delis in NYC but I can make a pretty good bagel sandwich with the right ingredients.

except it was (obviously) a different coffee. I think it was Charleston Coffee Roasters dark roast.

Here's mine:

I walk into Starbucks at 6:30 a.m. The girls all say "Hi, Zach." I say "Hey, babes." They have already started my order since they saw my car pull up.
Quad espresso, oatmeal with dried fruit, USA Today, Blue berry muffin to take home for the wife. Girl rings it up at 8 bucks and change. I hand over the Gold Card. She swipes it.

I walk over to the bar and open 4 packets of white sugar. Sometimes I have to say "Hey, Aerial, no milk canisters out here. Hand them over the counter and I'll set them up for you."

"Thanks, Zach, here ya go."

I sit in the comfy chair and read the paper while having oatmeal and coffee. Occasionally I look up at the Bible meeting of about 8 guys saying stuff like "So, since Jesus got angry, should we get angry too?"

I leave the paper so the next patron doesn't have to buy it. The girls say "Bye, Zach."

I have done this every day 365 days a year for the past 4 years. I love routine.

I don't eat breakfast. I don't wake up early enough for breakfast, and when I do wake up early (for me), it's because I have class so I wake up 30 minutes before and head straight to class

My first bite of the day yesterday was at 5:30PM.

for 10 bucks you could have all of that every day for a week if you did it yourself

Yep. I was born into poverty and spent all of my life denying myself to save money for the day when I could live high on the hog in my retirement. And I'm doing it.

The one habit from my years in poverty that I can't shake is clothing. I wear rags. Got a Lexus and a new Nissan Z. Got a nice house on the lake. But I wear clothes that are 30 years old with holes in them. That's just how I grew up and I feel comfortable in rags.

I see. Well, might I suggest supporting local north La. businesses rather than Starbucks if you have money to play around with?

The packaged crap sucks but the Quaker Weight Control has more protein in it than anything else I've seen. Plus, I eat it at work and don't have access to a stove here.

You get used to the disgusting texture after a while.

I make the steel cut oats. I just buy bulk at Whole Foods.

OK, I'm trying to do the oatmeal thing...placing it in rotation with green smoothies, egg white omelet and banana bran muffins. I have only made it using regular oats and I do NOT like it.

What is the difference with the steel cut oats? Taste? Texture? Health benefit? I know they take longer to cook, but I like the crock pot deal I saw in a previous post.

Help a sister out...

Starbucks hires local people. I'm supporting them.

You're in luck Zach, that style is back in right now. If nothing else, you can say you set fashion trends.

Yeah, the guy who owned the coffee shop was a transplant from New York. He was the only one I found in Charleston that did authentic Jewish deli bagels and sandwiches. It was a great change of place from the usual Charleston standard, shrimp and grits.

Besides Savannah, I haven't found it outside of South Carolina. You can order it online, but honestly, it isn't that much different than French Market dark roast.

I think you just cut the grapefruit in half, throw some sugar on it, and bake it till the sugar starts to brown and caramelize.
