Lebanon was once a French colony. A small group of Lebonese Catholics immigrated to south Louisiana following World War I due to the shared language and catholic culture. After World War II, more and more came and joined the growing Lebonese communities in Lafayette and Baton Rouge, fleeing the brutal civil war and rising wave of Palestinian Refugees which led to atrociies against Christian populations and the ouster of the christian government.
Since most who came here immigrated by choice, they auickly established themselves as business owners, merchants, doctors, and lawyers. Charles Boustany, Jr. is one such decendent, and he's a U.S. Congressman running for the Senate!
Boustany, Saloom, Karre, Caffery, ect are all Lebanese names.
Between the Lebonese, the Iranians who stayed after the overthrow of the Shah, and the Palestinian refugees who all came to the area, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Lafayette all have a ton of middle eastern restaurants. However, there are 4 factions, each with different spice palletes and religions:
Greek (Orthodox Christian): Zorba's
Lebonese (Marionite Catholic): Albasha's, Serop's
Palestinian (Sunni Muslim): Arzi's, Atcha, Akasha, Raul's

Best shawarma i have ever had outside of BR was on a freakin Disney cruise. All you can eat of it with all sorts of toppings right on the top deck. I made an absolute pig of myself for the whole trip.

There is also a place in Ocean Springs MS called Phoenicia that makes realy good shawarma although it is slightly different than the places in BR. It has a sauce that is to die for. Very good. Also their kibbi is identical to Albasha which is my favourite thing there.

I agree with the OP. I live in Ft. Worth now and travel a lot for work all over the country. Love Albasha chicken shawarma and try the local variant everywhere I go eventually. All are very different from here and none near as delicious to me.
I thought it was a legit question, not sure why all the internet tough guys.

You can find it in any city larger than BR and it's probably better. Don't get me wrong, when I lived in BR I thought Arzi's and Serop's were the bomb too but really they just enjoyed lack of serious competition.
Here in DC there are plenty of places that will teach you how to make it at home. Hell, the food trucks are better.

Lots of good info in your post, but Caffery is not a Lebanese name. It is Irish/Scottish.

I think most places in Charlotte are more Greek than Lebanese, so maybe that is the reason? Greco Fresh Grill in Blakeney is decent. For a cheap quick Gyro, Showmars actually isn't too bad. Greek Isles restaurant in South End closed for a while but I think are reopening at some point.

The ONLY 'fast food' place I know of that rivals Chick-Fil-A for service. Fast, friendly and the food is pretty good.
