I know IPY started back up as IPY2, but IPY was always a bit too hardcore for me. No mounts is a little wild.

Ah figured those two would be the ones. Ya, I'd have to read their logic on mounts. I imagine they are fast as all hell these days, but its part of the original game mechanics.

Is this the same Final Fantasy MMO from like 3 years ago?
I hated that one.. get to level 15 or so and then you're forced to group even for grinding (which is most of what the game is)

Nah. it is just that the masses don't have the cutting edge technology, and you need an MMO to appeal to the masses to make money.
I'm not talking about hardware though. I'm talking about AI and scripting, the necessity to have a blank canvas of a world. Not twitch gameplay and the like.
To really have the breadth of an "open world" game, you have to do so much more than they can do right now.

I would gander to say Final Fantasy XIV answers most of your problems.. and then some. Give you a non-broken game now, with HUGE depth and an awesome world.. but people can't get past the botch that was release, it's going to take a good E3 showing this year to show people it's not the same game I guess.
P.S: I started in Jan. of this year, I refused to play the game on release, and the guy in charge of the game now is one of the best gaming directors in the biz. (they fired the guy that created XIV.. )
So wait, is the game good now? Worth a shot?

What makes it a risk? They have a light and dark side (horde and alliance). It's game play is like most other MMO's with hotbars where you press 1 and you do your skill. Then you have your battlegrounds. It's just the WoW core with their own little nuances. Making this game wasn't a big risk. I'm not saying SWTOR is a bad game but every mmo is following the same build with 2 different opposing sides so they can have a pvp/pve mix to appeal to the masses.
I'm actually agreeing with you, whether or not that my posts shows that.
SWTOR wasn't a risk at all. The company that created SWTOR had the money to take a risk and make something that was new and original. They didn't tho.

The keyword with star wars is star wars.. 75% of the people in the game would have bought it just based on that.

That's the point I was trying to make the people with the money aren't willing to take risks. Curt Schilling was going to make his Kingdoms of Amalur MMO different but now it looks like it's going to turn into a 2 sides vs each other game.

Sounds like you are talking about FFXI. It was a lot like that. From what I've heard, FFXIV has made it so you don't have to group up to grind like that.
That was what drove me away from FFXI, was waiting for 2 hours to get a party together, taking 30 minutes to get to a grind location, then either grinding for a few more hours or somebody loses their connection and you have to disband or spend another hour looking for a replacement member.
And Freaux, these guys that have played the upgraded FFXIV are saying it's better than when it launched in 2010.

Dude.. this game is way more than worth a shot now, AWESOME game with more depth than almost any MMO on the market right now. It's very solo friendly, and with 2.0 coming out it'll have even more to hit to make me

You played Final Fantasy XI.. game was very archaic and a very very "hardcore" MMO. XIV is not that game, but XIV has nothing in common with the Final Fantasy XIV you see in the reviews either.. the only thing that is the same in XIV from release is the maps... and even those are easier now that they have 40000000000 times more fast travel options.

The ONLY way to beat a mob, is to learn how to use your skills, and their timers to your advantage.
There is infinitely more skill and strategy to combat in SWTOR, as opposed to WoW.
They do need to make more group/raid content.
And if they institute PVP ship/fleet battles. . .win.

That was FFXI. Huge grindfest. And unless your were a White Mage, Red Mage or Bard, looking for a party consisted of a good portion of your playing time.

FFXIV is worth a shot if you want something different than the countless WoW clones this thread is discussing. A lot of FFXIV's concepts will be pretty foreign to new players, but in time they earn their place in the game world. I've been through closed beta, open beta and initial release of XIV and I'll be the first to tell you the game was a royal mess... albeit graphically beautiful.
That being said, the game has improved considerably. Gameplay has almost been completely revamped, with more changes and improvements coming every patch. My main hook for XIV is to watch out for what's coming next.
FFXIV's changes aren't done yet. Endgame content is still maturing. Classes are being phased out in favor of classic Jobs (WHM, BLM, WAR, MNK, etc). All the while the game's inner workings are being tweaked constantly.
My point is if you're looking for a different MMO experience, try it out. Just know going in you're playing a prequel of sorts to the release of FFXIV 2.0.

Yes. Leveling is 100% soloable. Avatar battles and dungeons however... well prepare to group up and have fun.

I like that better than what I read about classes when it first came out.

I like this too. I fell so far behind everyone else playing FFXI because I didn't have the time required to grind.

One of the big complaints about SWTOR, is that there isn't enough grinding.
you could log in for a couple hours a day, and solo a toon to max level in a couple weeks.

Luckily, this is happening with this month's patch. Paladin, Warrior, Dragoon, Monk, Bard, White Mage, and Black Mage.

You have never played XI or XIV have you...?
A final fantasy MMO gets rid of the "different toons for different classes" system. There is absolutely no "2 sides of one coin" system either. Every single person is on the same team, and the PvP is almost always instanced, and is a part of some "world game even" kinda similar to gladiator fights and what not. You have X number of classes, and your 1 toon can be all of them.. no need to start a new toon just to level a new class.
Oh yeah, and you can't get to level 50 (the max level) in 2 weeks.. I'm at 6 weeks right now and still have a good bit to do before I want to get to 50. (yes I said want too, cause there is so much depth in the game, I don't want to get to end game content yet, because there is just soooooooo much to do in the world.)
ETA: Because of the 1 toon being able to be all classes.. you really get attached to 1 single character, something I have NEVER NEVER done in WoW type games. It's just a really neat experience. (also just like in xi, in xiv it is strongly encouraged to level other classes than just 1 because you get to use different abilities from other classes through "cross-over" abilities.. makes for an extremely deep battle system.)
