I’m wondering if I should just restart as a mage class. I get absolutely donkey fricked by melee since I still haven’t quite figured out what I’m doing. Aren’t caster classes easier for beginners?
There's no level cap, and I don't think the starters get additional bonuses, so you really don't need to restart. I will say, it's nice to be able to kill using melee and magic. I've had a blast using a delayed spell, luring a shield guy forward, and having that delayed spell fricking wreck his shite though.

I've been using comet azur with cerulean hidden tears to straight wreck bosses. Having a plus 10 mimic doesnt hurt either.
Here is a great farm spot for those that need it. You have to do a quick quest that takes maybe twenty minutes, but it's worth it.

At first I clicked, but then I decided I'm not doing that. I'm not watching any YouTube videos or reading any websites. I'm playing this completely on my own the first time.

After completing the game, I'm definitely of the opinion that this is the easiest of the fromsoft games I have played (DS1->3, Sekiro, now Elden Ring).
It's very easy to become overleveled due to the open world nature extremely early in the game and stay that way. The ash summons dramatically lower the game difficulty on top of that when it was already not particularly hard. I finished the game at around lvl 160 for context, and I didn't do any rune farming for levels. I just leveled normally via exploring etc.
The game did a number of things well, but I still hold the opinion that the clunky nature of DS style combat is too dated and way too shallow.
Overall, the game is good to great, and I would still recommend it. The content density is very impressive alongside very neat enemies and weapons/spells.
The ending sequence (no spoilers, don't worry) was disappointing however. 4 of the endings are legit copy pastes of each other with very tiny difference despite entire quest chains leading to them. 2 of the endings are really cool though.

Renalla and I killed each other at the same time because I got too risky at the end. I still got the credit but all the runes from her death are lost because my body is outside the limits of her room. Oh well.
After the abductor twins she was a piece of cake.

How many hours did it take you to beat it? And did you do all the side content?

Oh damn. You must have been pretty efficient with your gameplay haha. I am around 53 hours right now and am just about done with the red region (Caelid?).
Posted on 3/7/22 at 1:27 pm to ElRoos
Yeah you're thinking of Caelid.
I did a lot of exploration, but I kept holding W after cleaning out the loot/dungeons I found
I didn't get stuck on any bosses for any significant time, so that was most of it I'm sure. The closest to that is Margit at the beginning, and that's because I did that at level 12 which was just being extremely underleveled for that fight.

I was able to buy the stone that knocks Margit down by a dude named Peter or Paul, in a cave, after sparing his life.

Me too. I'm at 81 hours and have only beaten Stormvail and the Academy. I just got to Volcano Manor. I think I'm gonna do this one before I do the capital. I've been doing as many sidequests as possible, so I could easily see this first playthrough running 120-140 hrs.

Can you give me an example of a melee combat system you prefer? Genuinely curious. Witcher 3, maybe?

Nioh series is a good reference point.
I dig Sekiro as well.

Switching to a mage was the best thing I could have ever done. Just took down Margit at level 18ish, finally progressing past where I was stuck as a melee.
Also my game stutters twice in a row real bad every 5ish min, has gotten me killed a couple times. Anyone have this issue?

I tried Nioh multiple times and it never clicked with me. Something about it just feels like cheap difficulty to me.
Sekiro, on the other hand, is prob my favorite battle system of any action game. That or God of War 2018.

I much prefer souls combat to Witcher. Maybe I have just gotten used to it, much I much prefer it over games like Witcher 3 and assassins creed.

I'm level 42 at the Red Wolf of Radagon fight. Haven't attempted it yet, but I took out the Ancestor Spirit first attempt I have a feeling I will do the same here.

i'm running a strength build and finally got my strength up to 40 last night so that I can use the iron throne greatsword.
With that said, I'm having a hard time retiring my +15 heavy pickaxe...I've pretty much used it since the start. Can't remember where I found it but it was incredibly early in my playthrough.

Ancestor Spirit was a joke, by far the easiest boss so far.
Level 40, 27 hours in, almost ready to open the gate to Raya Lucaria
I've gone this whole time without losing over 1k runes, happened twice last night, once with 7k and once with 15k. I was raging so hard lmao. I opened that stonesword gate in the first dungeon, went down and killed the boss, kept exploring. got to the bridge with the 2 grafted scions, killed one and got knocked off by the second one. Ran back, tried to rush for my souls, and the impact from the first scion's roof drop knocked me off the ledge again. Could've smashed my controller
