I'm extremely interested in the position by I'm not moving to Baton Rouge until January. do you think there will be job openings for tester available at that time? Should i apply now for january or wait? I would love to work now but gas would kill me driving from hammond.

January is a very good time to be able to start. Right now were hiring at a "slow" pace (read: slow for what we normally do) January we will be picking it up quite a bit. You should apply now and make it obvious in your resume of your start date. Shoot me an e-mail and I can give you more detailed info.

Re AJF:
Send me an e-mail with what you got on Madden, ill forward it off to the right people. More than likely your issues are not something we have any control over here at the Test Center. However, I would still like to hear your concerns.
I don't do MySpace and I didn't notice an email, so I hope you don't mind me expanding on the matter here, amongst friends.

I've made it well known on this board that I am no fan of EA and the NFL licensing monopoly. Though this year's Madden is a good iteration in the franchise, it still falls flat on it's face when compared to 2K's NFL 2K5 in several arenas. I'll list them out here:

1. Presentation: If there was one thing that game did amazingly well, it was the in-game presentation. It had everything: ESPN graphics (Ding, ding, ding! Hell, even FOX's graphical overlays would be a nice addition to Madden), Berman doing the halftime report with accurate commentary on the scoring plays during the previous half and sideline reporting from Suzy Colber (I think it was her).

Madden's graphical overlays are way too clunky. They just don't make it feel like a TV broadcast. That's kind of what I'm shooting for here. NFL 2K5 was so good at immersing you into the stadium, into the sounds and it really felt like you were actually controlling the outcome of a TV broadcasted football game. In Madden, it does not and it falls woefully short.

2. Substitutions: Has EA never heard of formation subs? Say I wanted Robert Meachem to play right flanker in the I-formation, but Devery Henderson is the depth chart starter at that spot. Instead of having to do the whole depth chart rig-a-ma-role, at the beginning of the game or in the menu screen (off the field) I could go into the I-form formation and plug Meachem in for only that formation. In other words, Devery would be the right flanker in every formation except the I-form Normal package, where Meachem would take his spot. It was a very, very good way to scheme against the computer and added a layer of depth to the control over your team. Available in all game modes.

3. Saving: I love Franchise mode. I actually like to play 12-minute quarters or longer because how can I possibly get Deuce 25 carries and 115 yards in 3-minute quarters? I don't always have time to finish four 12-minute quarters of football, so I'd like to be able to save my game progress (like you can in MLB 2K8) at any point in the game. This, and the formation substitutions, would make Madden worth it's weight in gold.

4. Field goals: This is not a major complaint, but it would add to the presentation aspect I talked about in "1." This year's Madden starts out with a view from behind the screen and goal posts on field goal and extra point tries. Why not keep this view (at least in the single-player modes) for field goals? This is a very subtle way to enhance the experience while playing; i.e., more like a TV presentation. The ball needs to be animated a lot better when hitting the net, as well. And, check the flight times of actual field goals and Madden field goals. The Madden field goals are too linear and not as arched as real-life field goals.

To be blatantly honest, if EA did a next-gen mod of 2K's NFL 2K5 and included the things I listed, I think I'd pay double for it. But, the question is, how did 2K manage to sell that great of a game (what I regard as the single greatest football sim I've ever played) for just $20? Amazing.

Please, send these four things up to whomever you must. Make Madden better. These things can certainly help. I do want to thank EA for getting the openings of the games down...the outer stadium atmospheres look very good and so does the inside. The actual core gameplay is great as well. Just make the thing more immersive on the field, like 2K5.

Thanks.

My pleasure, and my apologies for not recognizing the formation subs. I never had a clue.

Im not familiar with any titles that we have released that have been unplayable to a general audience.

i guess it depends on your definition of playable...

nascar 08 was every bit as "playable" as gta 4. it wasn't a very good game, but it was "playable" in the sense that when i hit the power button the game came on.

if you want examples of the kind of half-assed production ea is known for just look at every basketball game ea has produced in the past 4 years (though ill give it to you nba 09, while it was still garbage, at least gave you the impression ea was trying to do something). or ncaa which, at best, is a watered down version of the perennially flawed madden.

right off the top of my head, golden eye rouge agent was another gem along with any sports game whose title ends in "street"

and how the hell do games like army of 2, that you and i can just tell is destined to have 200 used copies in every game store in town within a month of its release on sale for $15, get so much damn hype? i can't help but think about all these poor kids that mow lawns for a month, go out and spend 60 bucks on some piece of trash, play it for 10 minutes, throw it in the corner and start saving again, because they bought another overhyped turd... again.

It seems that most of your concerns are on a production side and not necessarily a testing side. The people at the NATC have little control of what new features make it to a game. We do give our feedback as "gamers" but we do not have any direct control.

For every Rouge Agent, and Army of Two (which I personally thought was a lot of fun) Ill point you towards a Spore, NHL 09 or Dead Space.

i realize that, and my original post wasn't a shot at you specifically so much as me expressing frustration at ea in general.

enough of my thread hijacking... take it easy.

So, do testers test for all games or specific ones?

I'd love to beta test for EA's soccer games.

Yall are seriously hating on an employee of EA that probably has no say so in the development side, which by the way, is probably located in Washington State or California.

Just be happy Louisiana has something besides chemical plants for once. I think this is an important step towards giving those kids who dream of working in the gaming industry a chance to get their feet wet.

Granted, testers aren't exactly high on the food chain but I'm sure if you get in there and prove your worth that by the time you graduate, you would be given a fulltime position in something other then testing, or at the least, a valuable recommendation and experience.

Serious props over to EA.

Relax, DonkeyKong, you can't interview over the interweb.

Harper's so right. So is EA NATC. I've heard great things about Spore, NHL 09 and Dead Space. He also forgot to mention DICE's Battlefield: Bad Company, which is a pretty solid title.

My qualms with Madden run deep. I don't understand how 2K got so much into NFL 2K5 and still EA continues to fall short, even though the core gameplay of Madden is very solid. Presentation makes up for a lot in playability, especially in sporting titles.

Its a mixture of both. Generally a tester is assigned to one project and works on it until its done. However, sometimes testers can jump from project to project.

DK - Our studios are based throughout the world (Orlando, Montreal, DC, Austin, Vancouver, Redwood Shores, LA, England, Spain, I'm probably missing a couple)

AJF - Don't worry it takes a little more than a few kind words on the internet to get a job.

Better late than never, but I finally got that application submitted. I don't know that my wife wouldn't kill me if I took that kind of a pay cut, though.
