Got an email today the local store near me is closing, apparently part of another huge wave of closers to kick off the year. This is the third time that the store closest to me has closed in the past few years. The nearest one is now 15 miles away.

For someone like me, who still prefers a physical disc or cart, it's kinda tragic. If you want physical releases day 1 GameStop was your only option.

The video game sections at Wal Mart, Target, and Best Buy are absolutely pitiful and sad. Dirty, poorly stocked, clearly a total afterthought.

The death of physical games was probably unavoidable but still sad

Where are you at?

Mine always has 3-5 people in line or actively shopping whenever I take the kids. They’ve done a good job of also branching out with football cards and other collectibles as well. Kids love the store.

They've been done for years, physical media is dead. I don't like it, but whatever. They are slowly fixing piracy, which was rampant.

My local GameStop is closing on the 7th but I still have two others within 5 miles. Ran up there yesterday after seeing the email hoping for some clearance items but nothing.

The overwhelming presence of shitty, unfinished, half-assed, unoriginal AAA games in the current market is exactly why no one wants to make the effort to go out to gaming stores and buy video games anymore.

Give people a reason to go and they’ll go.

Such as? I can buy and download the game on the spot. No need to go their crappy stores.

Nothing to do with the quality of the games.

Good riddance. I heard from multiple that they treated employees like absolute shite.

For a console, I will always choose physical media over a digital purchase. Steam is obviously Steam but I like having the physical media in my possession

Not really. It's the same thing that happened with places like Blockbuster and Movie Gallery. People can talk all they want about how they prefer to go in the store and peruse the aisles for a movie to watch that night, but the truth is once Redbox took off and streaming services became more robust, people simply weren't doing it anymore. Like stout just said, there are some people who still prefer physical media, but the convenience of clicking a button on your home computer/console and having the game available immediately (download times aside) is an impossible obstacle for stores like GameStop to overcome. I don't remember the last time I went into a GS other than it was right there and I wanted to kill some time.

But in spite of the argument about AAA quality, people are still buying games. That isn't the problem.

Have you been to a GameStop recently? They have no stock. There are plenty of good games out there in the AA space that get physical releases as well and Im down to buy them physically if the price is the same or better than a digital sale. Hell for some collector edition stuff I'll pay more.I got Warhammer Space Marine 2, Ready or Not, and Terminator 2D a few weeks ago. I looked for all of these at Gamestop and not a single copy of any of them was available new or used anywhere in our city with 3 stores or within 100 miles.

A year ago I was easily able to buy new copies of Resident Evil 4 Remake and Aliens Dark Decent (a fairly niche AA title) at my local Gamestop. I cant find shite there anymore.
