I’m old enough to remember the Xbox Series X would be what killed Sony. Meanwhile PS5s are selling as fast as they come in

Both consoles are great, they have their perks.

Own both, it's worth it.

But up until this generation, I've always owned both Sony and Microsoft consoles. And call me crazy, but it was a good thing for both to have good games.

People taking ownership of one console doing better than the other is textbook stupid.

The reality is neither Sony nor Microsoft are the good guys in this scenario.

Microsoft appears to take a pro-consumer stance now, but that's because they are being trounced by Sony in the console gaming space.

Microsoft, coming off the 360 era, was the company that tried to kill used game sales and promoted an always online DRM. Their response to people who didn't have a stable internet connection was literally, "they can still play the 360."

Meanwhile, Sony in the PS3 era allowed users to play online for free.

I don't want to see Microsoft buying up major third party developers just as a means to push Sony out of the console space. I'm sure if the Activision purchase fails, a company like Sega is probably next.

I can promise that once Microsoft becomes the only game in town and has no financial incentive to continue playing nice, they'll change.

even if microsoft acquires big properties and companies left and right, if they continue to fail on delivering the products its not going to matter.

Game designers have pride in their craft and will jump ship from a poorly run company with no vision that just wants to churn out garbage. Gamers are also much more hyper critical of products than consumers of other media. TV folks may be happy swallowing the same garbage Disney wants to churn out, i feel gamers are less likely to do so.

That being said i do hope this acquisition gets blocked. i don't see good things for blizzard or the community in general for its movement forward.

Sony is the one being a bitch and buying out exclusives. It was a smart strategy but should never have been able to do that. This is Microsoft showing Sony a FAFO moment.

There should never have been exclusives unless the brand created it.

MSFT's vision for the future of gaming is Xcloud which will allow consumers to play games through an app on their TV. Why wouldn't game designers want to get their games in front of as many people as possible?

im talking more along the lines of when a company is bought out by microsoft, their influence affects how the games are designed within that studio, often not for the better. Redfall for example was made by arkane. they know their shite and how to make a game. But by all reports they kept getting contradictory marching orders from the brass in microsoft to the point that what was put out was complete garbage.

To address the streaming point, i dont think this is a good business plan. Games have shown they dont stream particularly great and everyone who has tried has either failed or met only moderate success. Top that with that gamers are just now getting used to the point where they cant have physical media for their games anymore, if you try to tell them you cant even download their games and have to stream, i dont see it going over well. at least not in the near future.

In the near future? No. Perhaps in South Korea or Japan, but not with the US internet infrastructure. I do see it as the future that companies are marching us towards.

I don't know of any particular issues with Microsoft affecting the quality of the games their studios put out, but in my view, their has to be some reason why the only thing they've managed to churn out in recent years is the annual Forza and the occasional Gears of War. Once a generation, they'll release a Halo game that sputters out of the gate.

I actually read a report that MS was pretty hands off with Redfall and that Zenimax was the entity that mandated the game’s direction. That’s why 70% of Arkane’s staff left before/during development

I read the same thing. I also read that the team on the game was hoping MS would cancel it.

Absolutely is. Over the years I've caught shite for saying one company did something better than the other from each side. It's really bad with CPUs and GPUs for PC too.

So what you're saying is Redfall killed the studio?

Looks like he's saying Zenimax's meddling in the game was the cause of the turnover.

When a company loses 70% of it's staff, that's a pretty big deal.

yeah imagine you join a company to build beautiful $2M+ custom homes and then your bosses are like "actually we're gonna be building tool sheds"
