Supposedly there is some house somewhere on the map where you talk to a dude who says he sold it to the dude at the gold saucer or something.

I'm at the point where I hope the FF7 remake never happens because they'll just frick it up.
Dunno why they are so afraid to give us that system. It was amazing and kids today are still playing Pokemon, so it's not like it being turn-based would deter the newer generation.

I actually think VII is the most overrated. Don’t get me wrong, I like it, but don’t think it’s the best FF. My personal favorite has always been VIII despite its flaws, probably because it was the first one I played so it’s a nostalgia thing.
I’ve actually been on a FF kick lately. I just beat XIII for the first time last month and enjoyed it more than most. I thought the ending was among the best of the series. Now I’m playing the remastered version of IX since i never beat it back in the day. The transition from the fast paced battle system and story line of XIII to the turn based, dialogue driven style of IX was tough at first. It felt boring after getting used to XIII but now that I’ve settled in I can’t put it down.
The remastered of XII (think it’s called The Zodiac Age) comes out for xbone at the end of the month, thinking about tackling that one next. I remember not liking it when it came out back in 06 so I didn’t play it very much, but it’s one of the best reviewed FFs so thinking I should give it another shot. Then maybe XIII-2 after that

That's what frustrates me the most about JRPGs nowadays. What's wrong with a good ole turn-based or ATB system?

The Zodiac Age is great. Personally, I think FFXII has always been a bit underrated by some FF fans, but the Zodiac Age definitely fixed some issues that the original had.
I replayed FFIX, Final Fantasy Tactics, and The Zodiac Age recently (actually the first time for The Zodiac Age, but I'd played XII before), and it surprised me how much I liked XII.
Tactics is still an absolute classic, but it was IX that was the one I struggled to get through, and I have real nostalgia for that game. The Zodiac Age was a blast to replay.
It still has some issues (story), but it's definitely worth playing if you haven't played it before.

Well they made Dragon Quest XI, so they can still make good JRPGs.
Dragon Quest while good is not what I was referring to. Not an original Square IP. That came from the Enix merger as they owned the developer for that.
Not really a fan of that story told over and over but they are good games.
But my point is Square is dead. The original Square that made the great FF games, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Bushido Blade, Super Mario RPG, Legend of Mana, FF Tactics and more is gone.
Sucks.

Combination of developers not wanting to make the same game every year (as Final Fantasy has always innovated its combat) and people not being interested in turn based gameplay anymore. For those fans, they have made games for them. Bravely Default, Octopath Traveler, I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear are all classic styled RPGs. The only series that still does it and is relevant is Pokemon (which not all even consider it an RPG).
I suppose you could also argue for Persona, but there's a reason why people stopped making big budget turn based RPGs outside of staples like Dragon Quest and Pokemon. Action based games allow for a more innovation and are typically more popular.

Sad. Really is. Mistwalker was on to something with Lost Odyssey and I had hoped they would build upon that but they went mobile.
Xll was the last good FF but also a transition into what we have now. The best thing they did since was bring FFXIV back to life which was an abysmal launch. Yoshi P who saved XIV should be in control of that whole company.

Sakaguchi the founder of FF who was ran off during the merger with Enix was the founder of that. I am sure you know.

Yes sirrr. Hope we can get more out of him.

It was really so sad. They had a 3 game deal with Microsoft and MS dropped them after Lost Odyssey. It's one of my all time favorites.
They went mobile because it was the only thing they could do independently.

Lots of smoke about him being in charge of Final Fantasy 16. Shadowbringers is likely the last or second to last expansion for FF14, so his role is diminishing as the head of the FF14 dev crew.

Hot take: The best Final Fantasy, both story-wise and character-wise...is VI. Certainly has the best villain in the series by far.
It's also the first game if I recall correctly that specifically has an OPERA piece written for it.

That's not a hot take at all.

Yea, not a hot take at all. Personally my 2nd favorite.
Seems that for people who have played them all VI and IX get most of the love.

ill get crucified for this, but
X
VIII
VII
for me. those are the only ones ive played. X was my very first when I was 10 or so. VIII aged better than VII (i played them both back to back for the first time at 21). Much preferred the realistic character models in VIII as opposed to the little gremlins in VII. Story in VII was better obviously, but VIII had some epic moments (Battle of Gardens GOAT) and the absorb system or whatever was pretty fun even though you can get OP really quick. Cant believe how much time I wasted with that goofy card game too.
I started IX but got sidetracked. Will knock it out one day once I free up some backlog space.
Started XV and quit after 2 hours. I can spot dogshit from a mile away and have no interest in playing that one.
Is VI the one with the jester as the villain? I've always heard that one was awesome. I see it's on iphone, may have to scoop it

Yea, I find younger people who have played X first favor that more than us older folks. X is a really great game though so I have no issue with that.
My introduction to FF was Mystic Quest when I was like 6...
FF IV was my first mainline FF.

I remember telling you to play it. My favorite. The mobile port version that is available now on PS4 loses a bit of the charm IMO. Rather plug up my PS3 and play the real version of it, from the old store. Long loading times and all.

Yes. Kefka is basically the Joker who gets godlike powers.
When he realizes that he can't defeat a kingdom militarily, he poisons the water supply so that one of the player characters has to watch his wife and son die. When his boss isn't doing what he wants, he obtains godlike power, kills his boss, then BREAKS THE WORLD.
About halfway through VI, the bad guy WINS. You then have to pick up the pieces and salvage what's left by defeating him and allowing the world to heal. Most of the 2nd half of the game is spent finding the surviving characters (depending on your actions in the first half, one of the main characters either survives the sundering or doesn't)
Also great in VI is that there's no real primary protagonist. Sure Terra is the one most associated with VI, but the focus of the story is split between her, Celes, Locke and the Figaro twins.
IV is great too because you get to redeem the primary antagonist.

This dude keeps a stream of his play throughs of ff 8-15 on YouTube going 24/7. I’ll check it out when I’m bored to see which part it’s at. His playthrough of 10 is on the most because apparently that’s his favorite. He 100%s all of them

They still make them, you just gotta look a little harder. Have you played any Trails in the Sky games? They're turn based, would recommend. The tutorial is really fricking long though. Like 10 hours or so. >_> But once you break through it's a really cool game that took me back to the glory days of JRPGs. They have another series, Trails of Cold Steel, I need to get on that.
