18th hole “honors” at The Masters

Did anyone else notice that Scheffler took the “honor” on 18 in the final round?
Smith birdied 16 to Scheffler’s par. Smith now has the “honor.”
Both players made par on 17 (though Scheffler’s par probably felt like a birdie since he had to punch out).
Scheffler steps up and tees off first on 18 when Smith still had the honors. No one said anything during the live broadcast but I’m not sure if anyone mentioned it in the interviews after.

Yes, apparently the tournament committee just noticed because it just came across the wire that he's been disqualified...
Shame.

I think cam was just trying to stay out the way at that point. After they both hit their approach shots he hung back in the fairway while scheffler made the walk to the green.
He was very classy about the whole thing. Both are very easy to root for.

I agree they are both easy to root for and both seem down to earth.
Usually you see the leader let the other guy play so the crowd holds still and doesn’t hurt their concentration. Arguably, that’s not an issue at Augusta.

I’d be willing to bet Cam Smith gave it to him. Unlike match play, there is no codified rule about the order of play. It’s just a custom/courtesy in stroke play.

The kids today in high level tournaments don’t care about that. Hit when ready. I assume it is probably the same on tour.

Unless it was to give an advantage. Let me check out that put so I can make mine and win this tournament. 2 strokes to both. But frick that, you would have to break me off some prize money.

I was watching as they went to the tee, it appeared they discussed it briefly and Smith told him to go.

Pretty much standard procedure in every tournament if the outcome has been decided

There is no penalty for hitting out of turn unless it was done to give a player an advantage, in which place both the players agreeing would be assessed a two stroke penalty. No advantage was gained and it would have only resulted in two strokes anyway. Only Cam (losing two strokes) and the gambling folks would have been impacted by the final outcome if it was done to give Scottie an advantage.
