I would say they aren’t going to think the change “didn’t work”

Yeah I don't really know what the answer is here. Most sports aren't really "fair" in the way the playoffs crown a champion. I would just try to make them as entertaining as possible.

If they don't use any sort of match-play, I would like to see them acknowledge the regular season champion, and then start a true playoff. The top 70 make it to the first round. Only the top 50 advance. If Scottie finished #51 that week, he's still out. Start over the next week, but the top 30 advance. Finally, you get to the Tour Championship and it is just like this week. The difference is that this was actually a playoff system

such a stupid as shite way to determine the "PGA Champion", imo. I hate that they have a "playoff" that is then determined like a normal tournament.

I think they should figure out a way to have match play until the final tournament with seedings and have a smaller field for the "finals". But that wouldn't sit well with everyone, especially not TV when pairings stop after 14/15 holes routinely. And tough to figure out purse payouts.

The thing is, though, golf isn't like other sports. Tennis is probably the best comparison. And, like golf, winning the ATP title isn't the most important accomplishment of the season.

In golf, the FedEx Cup title is honestly probably 6th on the list. It's probably the majors, then the Players, then the FedEx Cup. I think the Tour wants the FedEx Cup to be a bigger deal, but I think the value the players put on it diminishes with the format as is. And honestly, the massive payout for the winner is the only great thing it has going for it. Otherwise, they just have a system where a player can dominate a PGA season and then be put on an even playing field with 30 other players in a winner-take-all tournament.

IMO, the way they did it from 2007-2018 was perfect. You accumulate points throughout the season to make the playoffs. The tournaments in the playoffs produced a lot more points, and then they shrank the field each round of the playoffs. Then, at the end of the Tour Championship, the points leader won the FedEx Cup, and a separate trophy was given to the tournament winner. It still puts incentive on winning tournaments in the playoffs because of the increase in FedEx Cup points compared to the :regular season" but also rewards golfers for their body of work the entire Tour season, not just on tournament.
