Do you bring a personal cooler when golfing? Story Time.

I played a round with some buddies this weekend at Stonebridge at Newport outside Houston. We booked the tee time later in the week (Thursday) and tried to get an earlier tee time to beat the heat and Stonebridge popped up as affordable and available. $45 for a Saturday mid morning round so I booked it.
We pull up and the starter immediately checks our carts pretty intently to see what we have with us. We each have a small cooler, I'm talking big enough to hold 6 beers each, and he opens them and makes us bring them back to the truck. Never had that happen to me before even at much nicer and more expensive courses in the area.
Group behind us pulls up to the tee box and we make some small talk while my buddy is bringing the coolers back to the truck. I took it they were members as he said this was the only starter that does that and he's a jackass for it.
I'm all for spending money at the club you belong to or not bringing large obvious coolers with you, but checking tiny coolers on a struggling course is a great way to lose business from a group of mid 20 year olds. We bring a few beers but will almost always purchase a bloody or some fireball shots from the cart girl later in the round.
Also, Stonebridge is dog shite
Almost every hole is a dog leg and the greens are shite. I would much rather play Wildcat, BlackHorse, or Cypresswood where the courses are nicer and the starters aren't assholes.

When you do this, you shouldn’t complain at being caught and just told to put them back. It’s inconvenient, but it sounds like you knew the rules and are just mad at them being enforced. Get over it. Move on. You’re not really an arse for trying to sneak on beers. But they’re not really out of line either. Truth is, courses make a ton of money on the alcohol sales. Your round isn’t enough to pay to keep the course going.

I revise my statement after reading the thread.
I always have a cooler with me with with waters in it.
If the course sells beer we almost always purchase from the Golf Course, unless where we are playing somewhere that doesn't sell beer.

People don’t understand this!
Do you bring alcohol to a bar? To a restaurant? To a concert?
Don’t complain about course condition if you don’t supplement the budget by buying alcohol.

quote:100% chance the OP does do this and it happens often probably least to a restaurant. But people constantly try to sneak in alcohol to a large event. Restaurants have corking fees. It only happens less at those places because it’s not so easy to do with workers all around.

Wonder if you had a cooler of Florida water mixed if he would have made you dump it out?

Nothing about this story suggests he would. He was looking for liquor and found it. They brought it back to their vehicles. A cooler of ice water that smells like cheap cologne isn’t getting dumped.

Yeah I should probably stop bringing my Busch 30 racks to Vic & Anthony’s but I’ll keep it up until they say something.
You’re following this thread so closely and so worked up that I’m starting to think you were the a-hole starter

No, never. I use the coolers the course provides.

That's 18 beers and you are acting like they told you that you couldn't have a bottle of water.
You're probably the type that gets hammered at the course making yourself looking like a jackass too.
Keep your blaring Florida Georgia Line shite at the lake, not the golf course.

I’m not. But I can tell it makes you feel better thinking only one person out there thinks what he did was okay, so you’re welcome to believe it and continue on your quest for affirming your feelings.
ETA: You’re over here admitting that you looked for the cheapest round and wouldn’t spend another $20 on beer. Please don’t pretend like you can afford a nice steakhouse.

I could be wrong but maybe that’s why want you to buy the beer there.

That's a golf no no in my opinion. There are rules for a reason. The Golf business is already hard enough. Add in people sneaking their own beverages on the course doesn't make it any better. If you want to drink while playing golf buy the beer at the course. If you can't afford to buy beer at the course you shouldn't be playing golf to begin with.

This is how I feel. I don't blame people for bringing their own drinks, but I don't blame the course for stopping you.
Also, the OP mentioned Blackhorse. You could have played Stonebridge twice and bought all your beer for the price to play there.
Also, you may want to buy one of these:

No I don’t.
I have no problem spending a few more dollars at the course.

I just can't believe people drink beer while playing golf.

See I guess maybe growing up playing alot of golf has my mindset very different. I 100% can't stand people trying to sneak their own drinks onto the course. Golf courses are closing down all over the country. People take the attitude that they aren't hurting anybody but those rules are in place for a reason. But if just one group like the OP pulls that crap a day then you looking at roughly 15-20k the course isn't getting a year and that's only one group. Imagine if 5 or 6 groups did it a day.

I guess I will argue philosophically. What is the cut off? I imagine most people bring their own midround snacks to the course. It is never looked at as doing something wrong. The course sells snacks in the club house. Is it up to the player to understand how the course makes money? Unless there is a sign stating no outside drinks, is it assumed that you can bring water, Gatorade, snacks, etc; just no alcohol?
I don't really have a dog in the fight. I don't like drinking on the course, but that is mostly because I tend to play midday in the summer when nobody is on the course because it is 1000 degrees. I just figured I'd play devil's advocate.
ETA: Also, I'm fully aware that alcohol has some magical element to it that makes it different. If I buy a coke from the halfway house, I don't really feel obligated to tip. If I buy a beer, all of a sudden that thought creeps into my mind.

Yea no doubt, you need to buy your beer at the golf course.
