As a 16 handicap, I can't tell you the vast majority of my triple bogey type holes are due to 2 things
1) trying to get cut when i get in trouble off the tee and not just punching into the fairway
2) wedge related issues around the green
I feel like you have to make step changes in goals to your golf game, you can't always be looking to get a birdie on a hole if you are a 15~ handicap player. Your focus should be getting on the fairway then getting on the green. I know that sounds like obvious advice, but what it means is things like not trying to cut corners on a par 5 off the tee, not going for the pin when its tucked in a corner by a bunker.

Getting cute is what my dad calls my mistakes.
Short sided from a tight lie, let's hit the Phil flop to see if I can hit it within a foot instead of just pitching it onto the green and giving myself a putt at it. Same with the driver. I did it at SM the other day on 14. Tried to start it just over the trap with a draw to cut the corner and it caught a branch and went into the lake. I should have just played it out right and had a short iron into the green.

Man I know this feeling. Most public courses in Dallas, the ground is so hard, if I hit a good drive on a par 4 it’s usually a low iron or wedge.
However half the time I try and do something super fancy to give myself a half wedge.... no idea why, I’m probably better with a full 9 iron from 145 than I am trying to hit a half wedge from 75 yards

Played City Park in BR today and got super conservative. Aimed for the center of every green and hit 5 iron off of number 4 (a 280 yard par 4). Played 9 and was only 1 over. My best 9 hole round in a long time.
I hit it well, but not amazing. Was bored shitless by 9 though. It would take a herculean effort to get me to do that for 18 holes.

I’m beginning to think I should quit for two weeks, and then sell my clubs.
6 pars on the front.
Chernobyl level meltdown on back.

I played the back 9 at Santa Maria in BR today. Shot 44 (+8). How did I get there? 2 birdies, 1 par, 2 bogeys and 4 doubles
One of the birdies was on 18, so at least I got off the roller coaster with a good taste in my mouth.

I think that I just lack talent and sometimes I fail to execute.
My luck is not always able to overcome the combination of lack or talent, poor execution, and low IQ decision making.
I guess I’ll just be glad to be getting to play and whatever happens, happens.

During this quarantine I've scored a 74 and a 96 on the same course within the same week. Golf is just weird sometimes.

to deal with your 7s you need to change how you think about them.
"out of nowhere" is wrong.
lets see why.
out of nowhere means as if it materialized from thin air. its about space.
look, scores happen on every hole. say you are 180 out on a warm day, no breeze. you take out an iron you can usually control and you plop the ball 6 feet from the hole and it slowly rolls in.
you just made an eagle 3 on the easy 5 you never even had a birdie before.
was that out of nowhere?
no.
the hole was there all along. you played it 100 times before.
that is exactly what happens with your 7s, only not as happy.
so get over "out of nowhere." there is no such thing.
now you can face the course for what it is.
use youtube now.
see ideas how to deal with your very tough lie and realize and accept that some unusual shots are really hard.
look at the pot bunkers in England.
peace. out. god bless us every one.

I made an 8 today which makes me feel better about 7s.
Had a two putt birdie “ out of nowhere.”

Do what the pros do and eliminate penalty shots.
If you are making 7s without penalties, I suggest vodka

No 7s today!
However, I only played 9.
4 pars, 5 bogeys.
Steady.

Try to shoot 9 with your Driver in your truck. See if the big numbers disappear. You’ll be shocked to see how well you can shoot when you hit every ball in the fairway. If I’m trying to go low, the hole has to be WIDE OPEN for me to hit driver. Otherwise I’ll hit whatever I KNOW I will put in the fairway even if it’s a 6 iron. There’s a lot of holes that hitting driver is just stupid. I have a good friend who is around a 4-5 hcp that never hits higher than a 5 iron off the tee. Fairway, on or around the green, 2 putt or chip/putt for par.

Then, he needs to start playing the men’s tees.
While I agree that sometimes you need to put away driver, you need to learn to control the driver or only have 1 miss. If your miss is a slice/heavy fade, play it! Learn your lines on you home course. Learn where you can miss. Lunch out when needed.
Last, develop a short game! Have the feeling that if you can get the ball within 100 yards, you will only hit it 3 more times tops. It frees up your game big league

in my book its ok to have fun. if you have to be serious all the time its a drag.
if you can afford a ball in the lake, have fun.

He plays tips or one box up depending on the group. Seriously. It can be extremely frustrating to lose every time out and it seems like he’s not even trying.

I refuse to believe it unless you’re on a fairly short course, and he’s the best iron player ever.
Let’s say he can hit it 200 yards which is a big 5i. If a hole is over 400, he can’t get it to the green. Now, he’s either taking bogie or can always pitch it close and 1 putt.
I’m not calling you a liar, it’s just unbelievable to me.
