You are better than 75% of all golfers.
Statistical Averages
According to data from the National Golf Foundation, only 26 percent of all golfers shoot below 90 consistently on regulation 18-hole courses; 45 percent of all golfers average more than 100 strokes per round. A player who shoots 85 is doing better than nearly three out of four of his golfing peers--a good score.

I never believed this until I played Lost Key in Gulf Shores/OB. A guy I played with is a member at a Lafayette area private country club and lost a dozen balls on the front. He kept calling it lost ball.
That course is easy as hell and wide open.

I play with mostly good players.
I average literally 85.
87 today, 81 Wednesday.
I rarely break 80, but it happens.
Index 9.5.

I play a lot of public courses and always pair up. I typically shoot low to mid 80s and occasionally, on a great day will break 80. I’d say 95% of the time, I’m the best golfer in the group.
That’s prob the best comparison to the average golfer as I’m sure there’s a higher percentage of better golfers playing in their own games or members of private clubs.

Currently at an 8.4 Hdcp with an average score of 81.2.
I do dance in the 70’s, but not as often as I could. I complain about it, but never practice, don’t work out, and only play 3-4 times a month, on average.
In the league I play in, I’m currently the number one player. Guess that says a lot about the group. ??

The average score and the average index are slightly different measures.
The average score on a 72.6 138 slope course will be higher relative to index.
I’m single digits at some courses, but not all because at 9.5 it all comes down to course rating and slope.
Wednesday I played a 69.6 course at 131 slope.
Saturday was 72.6 and 138 slope.
I played almost the same, a little better on Wednesday.
What is the average handicap index?
Maybe 14 or so?

In determining where you stand among amateur golfers in general, it helps to know what the average handicap is for both men and women. The average male golfer has a handicap of 16.1, while the average female has a handicap of 28.9.

I don’t feel above average.

I’ve always thought this to be so incredibly inaccurate. My rationale is that if you were actively keeping a handicap you’re most probably a decent golfer. There is no way on earth the average amateur is shooting in the 80s more likely the 110s at a decent course.

The Hcp will slide up and down to accommodate different course ratings and slope.
Even then some courses are just damn hard.
Years ago I played Doral Blue Monster and shot a great score of 76.
We then went another course called Colony West, that course was so damn hard, I shot a 97.
The year before, they had a Hogan Tour event (Now Korn Ferry) there and only 2 players broke par over 3 days.

I play multiple courses in the area. Wide range of difficulty and length. If I post a score from a specific course and the tee/yardage I played, I "assume" the WHS would adjust the numbers accordingly? No?

It does adjust the score appropriately when taking into account the rating and slope from the tees you play.

I completely understand this. However it was not really what I was trying to convey. What I meant was the majority of club golfers and weekend golfers don’t even bother logging a handicap and thus the handicap system is really only a snapshot of more serious golfers who actually take the time to log a handicap. My assumption is if you calculated the handicap of all golfers it would be over 100.

Important addendum there: "The average male golfer who keeps a handicap has a handicap of 16.1"
The subset of golfers who keep handicaps is a minority of golfers. The subset of golfers who keep relatively accurate, up-to-date handicaps is a minority of a minority.

I put in all scores.
I have friends who do not put in 9 hole scores.
I put in all scores so I can track rounds played. I also put it in hole by hole and with stats availeth for GHIN.
Gives me some info on fairways hit, greens in regulation, and total putts.
It’s not as granular as I would like, but it’s something for me to look at to decide where to focus practice. As of now it’s GIR improvement.
