Cam is the only guy that finished under par and he was still 10 shots off the lead. Mickelson, Koepka, DJ and Bryson finished all even or over par for a combined 6 over. How exciting!

So are they shitty players or are they diluting the pga field?

The biggest complaint about LIV now is that it's not viewed as a real competition since it has no cut.

Misleading numbers. There were something like 200k plus watchers per round in the US on the CW alone which is more than they were getting on YouTube last year.

Golf digest is the most unprofessional and whiny PGA mouthpiece out there. This is low, even for them.

They went from awful to bad. 240k or whatever it was is nothing. The Pgatour gets more than that on Thursdays.

Golf digest implying that their viewership tanked is just factually incorrect. It’s pretty pathetic.

I mean, I don’t love Golf Digest, but the first event of the season drawing that isn’t good at all.

Maybe the guaranteed money is doing both. They don’t have as much incentive to grind with the guaranteed money and no cuts. So if they would have stayed on the PGA tour they would be sharper for more tournaments.

Of course with them playing the majors I’m expecting a different attitude for those tournaments. A more competitive attitude for the majors.

With their owgr dropping so quick, this is the last year to play in majors for many of the LIV players.

But not for Koepka, DJ, Bryson, Cam and Mickelson who have all won majors recently and are exempt for a few more years. Also, DJ and Mickelson are exempted for life at the Masters. And finally their clock will reset if they win another major in the next few years.

LIV Golfers with Lifetime Exemptions to the Masters

Dustin Johnson
Patrick Reed (This one really sucks)
Sergio Garcia
Bubba Watson
Charl Schwartzel
Phil Mickelson

Players that have five year exemptions (all expirations are based on if he never wins a Masters that would be a lifetime exemption or wins another major that would reset his exemption another five years.)

Cameron Smith (expires in 28)
Bryson Dechambeau (expires in 26)
Brooks Koepka (expires in 25)
Mickelson (expires in 27 for all majors not the Masters)
DJ (expires in 26 for all majors not the Masters)
Reed (expires in 23 for all majors not the Masters)

All of the rest of players and Reed will need OWGR points, a Masters win or another major win to qualify for 2024.

I watched one round of LIV. It was kinda odd to not have many fans at a sporting event. Not sure why this diluted the enjoyment for me, but there were like 10 fans on the tee box from what I saw.

The commentators all kept making backhanded comments about how LIV is greater than PGA. When the hype on the ground doesn't match the hype coming from the commentators, it's a little odd.

I gotta imagine that the players are simply there for the paycheck and nothing more. There's no way they prefer the tiny crowds at the courses over what they get here in the PGA. I don't see golf as a huge fan draw in the middle east and some of these countries they are playing. It's kinda like the NFL struggling to get crowds in other countries. Some interest, but not enough to justify the venue.

In the quest to build a more self-sustaining business, LIV has off-loaded all of the travel costs to each team, though, recognizing the tour is still in its early days, it did supply a stipend for this season. (The plan is to abolish the stipend beginning in 2024.)

“Players still keep the individual money they win—in Howell’s case, that was a tidy $4 million—but the $3 million for the team victory goes into the Crusher coffers, not the players’ pockets.

“Each player is paid an annual salary by the team, and at year’s end bonuses and/or profit-sharing is a possibility. But that depends on how much the team earns and how much it spends, which has brought class wars to LIV.”

Agreed. But you should go follow a tour player ranked 75-125 on a Thursday. It will likely just be you and his girlfriend watching on holes where there are no stands.

Golf Digest isn't the only one saying that. It's all over twitter.

If you want to call something pathetic, LIV is on Twitter saying that they almost had as many viewers are the LPGA Tournament.

LIV is feeling the pinch.

According to Alan Shipnuck of The Firepit Collective, executives at LIV Golf are making an effort to “rein in” Greg Norman.

Shipnuck was at last week’s LIV Golf 2023 debut in Mexico, where “The Shark” didn’t speak to reporters. Shipnuck believes that was not by coincidence, and writing in his article this week, the journalist reported that a LIV executive said:

Thats a big change from all the instagram clips of them flying in private 747s last year.
