1) The biggest key for me to get over those big number is to take less off the tee when I know there is trouble on a miss. So if left is dead, dont hit a driver if Ive been really hooking it.

2) Learn a consistent save shot. I hit a 5i. I can hit a big sweeping cut or just a dead handed low runner that goes straight and barely gets off the ground. It a long recovery shot that gives me a chance for a pitch and putt par save. WORST score I will take is bogey in that scenario if I do it right.

This is great advice.

Any tips for overcoming it?

When I was playing a ton I found working on my 100yds to fringe game made the biggest impact on big numbers. Once I started gaining confidence with my wedges, that I truly understood that I could execute and get the ball on the putting surface, o found myself playing recovery shots geared towards positioning for my approach shot rather than trying to pull off some miraculous hard draw out of a trees after threading an opening thru leaves. It made me putt for a lot more bogeys instead of triple bogeys.

I was watching this tournament and saw Stenson do this on live tv...

LINK

It reminded me that even the pros, the guys who does this for millions of dollars, hit bad shots too. I've never got mad over a golf shot since. That and course management are the two things that really changed my game, and the enjoyment of it.

Now when I hit a bad shot it's just pretty much "well that sucked" then laugh it off. Not to mention, nobody likes playing with pissed off guy.

You just answered your own question. You took a risky punch shot when you're better play would've been just to play out into the fairway and take your bogey. It's such a hard thing to do to make the smart play instead of trying to doing the superman approach trying to save par.

since op is not in tournament the appeal is to friends.
friends with humor.
friends who know.

you arent saving par with a curving shot that only Trevino or Mickelson could do.

make it a rule.
if in the trees
only put the ball in fairway.

no vandevelt either.
if you go in the water take the drop.

conversely once a month go out as if you are the all time greats.
no limits.
have fun.

NP.

I discovered that one before I took up golf. I was watching the game between Northwestern (Nachitoches) and Sam Houston. The commentator said that the NW kicker used to miss his kicks until his coach told him about thst book.

After that, he hadn't missed one since then.

If it helps, you should be limiting your max score to double bogey.

Under the new system, max score is “net double.”
