Sand / bunkers

My game, I actually aim for green side bunkers if I need to. More comfortable in sand than even chipping from the turf.
To each his own.

I played a par 5 today with a 9 iron from tee to green. Also played driver, 7 iron wedge shot. Bogeyed both balls. Was an interesting experiment. Definitely only had one putt on the 9iron shot and 2 putted my other. 3 good 7 irons and I could have been on the green with a two putt. Maybe 8 iron.

My $.02 is the approach shot placement is the most critical for scoring birdies or hitting par if you don’t get on in regulation.

Exactly. The sand is your friend

The reason why hack McGee is so sensitive on this subject and doesn’t value sand shots is because his strategy is to try to avoid them. And his plan B is to just pick the ball up after his second failed attempt to get out, and then scribble a double bogey on the card with his hotdog fingers

It depends on the player and the development cycle of the player, but generally...

1. You need to be able to use the driver as a weapon rather than be defensive off the tee

2. Most near scratch and better players are absolutely rock fricking solid from ~150 yards or so - pretty near 3.0 shots to hole on average.

Pros hit the green from 150-175 right about 2/3rds of the time. Id assume it's about 50/50 for scratch

Do you know what their percentage is on 150 and in? I'd guess it's more than 2/3rds of the time. But could be wrong. I'll have to pay attention next time I play but I think I'm in the 2/3rds group from 150 and in. But that's one shot that I practice a lot on. That's really the shot that gives you a chance at birdie or not assuming you hit your driver half way well.

Only speaking for myself.

I need to improve in several areas:
1. Drive better
2. Approach better.
3. Pitch better
4. Chip better.
5. Better bunker play.
6. Lag putting
7. Short putts inside 5 feet.

I think 7 will always save a stroke. I also will practice 3, 4, and 5 more.
My full swing is somewhat limited because of talent.
