If you didn’t know Rory made an equipment change and is no longer using blades. He’s using cavity hacks for more forgiveness LINK

This brings out a great question that Grant Horvat asked on Twitter. If Rory freakin Mcilroy uses cavity backs, why would anyone still be playing blades?

I play a pro grind so I can curve the ball out of the trees, where I live off the tee.

The forgiving big cavity back ones just go dead straight.

So basically I’m so bad off the tee, I need tree specific irons.

One of the best players I know plays game improvement clubs. He's a plus handicap.

What a puss. How’s he going to get that pure feedback and shot shaping only a blade can provide?

Signed,

Cavity backs in appearance. Smaller head, little to no offset and I am sure the internal tungsten weighting/ balance all match his blades.

I play blades because I can and I enjoy the look.

The ability to shape shots afforded by blade irons has been neutralized by the modern 4 piece golf ball. The ball is designed to fly straighter and not curve like previous generations.

Blades look cooler, that’s the main advantage to playing them

I play MP 32 Blades. Used to play them 3-PW. Now I have a combo set for 7 and down. Although it's partly bc my 7 iron MP-32 broke, otherwise I would still game that one. Using game improvement clubs has definitely been a game changer in the longer irons though.

I'll probably never not hit blades from 8i-PW. You can literally hit whatever number, shot shape, or trajectory you want with those vs the ball randomly hotly jumping off of the game improvement irons at times.

lmao my new set of MP33s just arrived via fedex today.

Took them straight to the sim and was flushing them. Felt great and didn't feel noticeably harder to hit than my ping hollow bodies.

Had a few off center strikes of course. Those shots weren't great but they weren't nearly as bad as I was expecting based on what everyone says about blades. No idea if I'll actually put them in the bag for a round but they'll be fun to mess around with and practice ball striking.

45 land angle, yikes. Not enough speed to be playing that set up.

I love the look of blades but not the performance. The MP245's give me what I love.

Working my way back from injury.

At full strength I’m pretty damn fast, as 3piecespicy can attest.

Seems like people, not saying it's you, think all cavity backs are game improvement irons. The CB's Rory is hitting are still player irons that are + handicapper to 5 ish handicapper clubs. There's virtually no offset and the sole is just slightly wider.

I mean he switched to some P7CBs … it’s not like he went to a game improvement iron.

Me too. Nothing feels like a Mizuno.

I played MP60s (forged) and went for an upgrade fully expecting to get fit for JPXs (cavity back). Ended up with blended set of MP20s (6-P) and MMCs (4-5). Had too much “turf interaction” with the wider sole of the cavity back clubs. The thinner sole of the forged works for my swing. 9 hdcp.

I went and hit the new Mizuno M13’s today. I wholeheartedly agree with that statement now. Holy shite they were unbelievable. I will be replacing my i230s with the Mizunos

2 handicap, blended bag.
Apex Pro P-7
Apex 6-3 (the apex 3 is like having a hybrid great off the tee when needed)

I was fitted into the regular APEX, despite telling the guy I did not like it. (my first time ever being fitted for clubs after 30 years of golf) after a couple rounds I called him and ordered the Apex Pro portion.
could probably roll with Apex Pro across the board. but the worst part of my game is long irons.

this was after being in mizuno MP53 since 2010. picked up 1/2-1 club of distance.
so I had to drop my wedges from 60/56/52 to 60/55/50 to fill the gap some.
