Dude was a stud athlete who could absolutely mash a golf ball, remember watching him hit 240 yard long irons in the day, had 94 wins on the Japan Tour where a lot of good players played.

quote:

He featured in the top ten of the Official World Golf Rankings for almost 200 weeks between 1989 and 1998

His winning spanned almost 30 years on the JGT, he was a professional baseball player before going pro in golf at 23.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen him play, but he looks like a baws baw. I’d tee it up with him.

He was nicknamed Jumbo in Japan due to his towering height.

He’s 5’11.

I remember him from the majors when I was a kid. Dressed like a boss and was alway toking on the course.

I did read later that he was thought of as a cheat. He’d do stuff like Patrick Reed... Greg Norman said when he drove it in the rough, he’d keep his driver in his hand walking down the fairway and then would set up to the ball with his driver and act like he was lining up the shot, but he was really smashing down the grass behind the ball. Then he’d give the driver to his caddy and take the iron he was going to play the shot with.

What I remember about him most was that he was one of the first to use the "modern" driver (before the titanium heads). I remember seeing these "Jumbo" drivers at stores like K-Mart. They became very popular. I could be off with my timing, but I think it just preceded the Callaway War Bird which really revolutionized the driver and the golf club in general. Back then, manufacturers might come out with new clubs and new "woods" every 3-5 years. Now, it's a yearly event.

I use Winter Rules (aka "the foot wedge")....

ETA: Someone should blow this up a little bit and photoshop Patrick Reed's head on Judge Schmails body.

Shingo and Shigeki were fun to watch. Shigeki was always smiling. I just like the fact the Shingo was able to pull off a cowboy hat look on the golf course.

The Shotgun Start did a spotlight on him during the pandemic. Very interesting stuff.
