The game has been like this for almost 25 years now - what is happening isn't new. More players are just doing it.

No it hasn't. Here are some stats since your analysis is lacking any substantive evidence.
Average driving distance:
2000 1/195 >300 yards
2005 26/202 >300 yards
2010 12/192 >300 yards
2015 27/190 >300 yards
2020 73/201 >300 yards
Elks point is that ~now~ (the last 5 years) guys have the ability, through advancement in tech & strength, to now hit it beyond hazards and into areas that although out of position - still have the ability to hit at the flag and hold the green.
While this style of play won't go away (the drawing), the tour could protect the golf course by growing out the rough and penalizing.

Was the rough not grown out for the US Open? And, Like I said, people have always been long, more players are 'long' now.

The yardages on the picture contradict your point and the stats posted.

It was. The rough being grown out at a long course helps the longer players get to the top of the leaderboard, just like last year at Bethpage. Especially if the fairways are narrow.
Bryson and Wolff are hitting wedges-low irons from the rough which is doable vs. shorter players hitting mid/long irons from thick rough which is nearly impossible.

I’m not sure why this bothers people so much

Length is a skill just like hitting it straight. A guy won that played a great last round and also hits it far.
DJ, JT, and a few others hit really far too and they didn’t win or shoot under par Sunday.
Oosthuizen doesn’t hit it far and placed top 5?

Bring back the dogleg and shot making courses.

Not really, if that was Shinnecock they would be fricked in the long rough

Hes pretty fricking long

pretty fricking long
Never mind. He’s 129th in driving. Behind Spieth. Not long.
They all hit it far. Compared to normal people.

This is backwards IMO, it sounds counter intuitive but larger fairways and shorter 1st cut will help the players who aren’t as long.
Like someone above said, with the narrow fairways and crazy rough right off of it you end up with Bryson hitting a sand wedge out of the weeds and shorter guys hitting 7 irons out of the weeds, huge advantage Bryson.
Widen the fairways and make the 1st cut shorter, it’s still wedge vs 7 iron but now the guys hitting the 7 iron can actually do something with it

Yeah averaging 307 off tee on measured holes, you're right hes not long......clown world. He can hit it as far as he wants too
Posted on 9/22/20 at 10:09 pm to Strannix
He’s 30 to 20 yards shorter than the top hitters. Wasn’t that the difference that Elk was talking about.
He hits it a mile compared to normal golfers. But short in terms of tour players.

One approach I'd like to see a course try is graduated rough. Not graduated the further you get from the fairway, but graduated the further you get from the tee. Example, 450 yard par 4...250 yards off the tee, the rough is 2 inches. 275 yards off the tee, the rough is 3 inches. 300 yards off the tee, the rough is 4 inches, etc. That might make guys like Bryson think twice about hitting it so far, but if not, it will at least allow the people who do choose to lay up to have a chance to get it closer. Not sure if this is feasible from a maintenance standpoint though.

Why penalize someone for being able to hit it longer?
Posted on 9/23/20 at 7:35 am to medtiger
Yeah if all things are equal and I hit it further than you, I get penalized?

I don't get that either.
Golf courses should mix it up. Some holes should favor long hitters. Some should favor precision drives and so on. Golf is boring when courses are setup to promote one skill over another.
Ever since the wound ball went away this is how the tour has been.

Hell if we’re really thinking outside the box, do an event where all the players have to use persimmons and 80’s tech irons.
