Monty is history unless he wins a Sr. major.

He's won numerous senior majors I'm pretty sure.

Edit: 2 PGA's and 1 US Open.

How does Zalatoris meet the 20 major requirement? Is he really that old?

If the question is, who is the most accomplished player without a major, then Cantlay belongs near the top of that list.

That's what's in the OP fwiw.

If it's all-time, which I think it is, I'd edit it to be Monty. Cantlay would be active.

He doesn't. Honestly WZ would maybe crack a top 10 never to win one if you are just counting active players. He's nowhere near the list if this is all-time.

It would be hard to argue against Monty all-time. Dude has 30+ euro tour wins. An 8 time euro tour player of the year.

An earlier poster brought up Lee Westwood, which I never would have even thought of. Didn't realize he had won 25 times on the euro tour and was ranked so high for so long. He has an incredible resume.

I don't think really anybody can touch those two resume's without winning one. As far as Americans go, Steve Stricker would be near the top.

The best player without a major is Aberg. The most accomplished players without a major are Finau and Homa. Aberg will win one before either of them do.

Before he got married, it was Rickie Fowler. Even pros are not immune to their golf game struggling after marriage (see Justin Thomas and Spieth as other examples).

I’ve never even heard of him.

I would still say it’s Rickie Fowler even tho he hasn’t been great the last few years. But he has finished 2nd in every major except the PGA which he finished as high as 3rd. He has 12 top 10s in majors including 9 top 5s. In 2014 he finished top 5 in every major without a win. Hard to believe he hasn’t won one.

I get what you’re saying, but I think the only one he had a lead in at any point was the 2014 PGA and he still had a while to go when Phil and Rory tied him.

I do think it’s fair to say Rickie is the best player in majors without a win, and but maybe not the best player overall without one.

Willy Z has 6 top 8 finishes and 3 runners up in majors. He absolutely is on that list of current players but his injuries are going to be too much to overcome to win one it looks like.

Pretty sure Rickie had the 54 hole lead at the US Open in 2023 at the Los Angeles Country Club.

The argument can only really be made for Aberg if you're going off of "who is playing the best right now."
Correct

He isn’t eligible for this award yet

It's Cantlay if the criteria were "who is the most accomplished player who still has a competitive chance to win a major".

It's Aberg or Hovland if it's the most purely talented player in the sport right now who has not won one.

Yep he sure did. And then shot a 75 in the final round and barely made T5.

So if we're talking all time, he's nowhere near the list. Like not even on the radar. He has one tour win. It would be point to list off 100 other golfers that would deserve to be on the list over him.

If we're just talking current players, factoring in accomplishments and how good they are right now, he still isn't even in the top 10 of that list. Just off the top of my head...

Cantlay
Fowler
Glover
Finau
Home
Hovland
Fleetwood
Kuchar
Paul Casey
Ian Poulter
Snedeker

And no telling how many others. Most of those will obviously never win one but they are all technically active. Zalatoris had a decent run and he would probably be above some guys with multiple tour wins but you cannot put him over the guys that have 5+ or so PGA or euro tour wins. His little 2-3 year run of good play where he cracked the top 10 in world does not put him in the "best player without a major" list, no matter what the criteria. Tons of guys throughout history have done what he's done.

Man I had completely forgotten about that US Open. He's had himself a pretty respectable career. Winning in 3 different decades.
