Sorry for the dear diary post in advance.
3-1/2 years ago my entire world was rocked. I was in a terrible crash and should have died. Instead I was burned severely on most of my body and my shoulder was destroyed.
My mentality and desire to do anything physical-or healthy- was also destroyed. I’ve fought depression and an all out hatred of mirrors. Long story short I’ve really let myself go.
I’m ready to get back in shape. Currently 6’3” 255. Fighting weight is 230-235.
Considering joining a CF gym in town and busting arse to get back in shape. Is it feasible to do with a bum shoulder that severely limits range of motion?

I thought you were gonna say like 5’9 300.

I’ve never done CrossFit but maybe not the best option for your shoulder. These guys will hook you up though.

I don’t know you, but sitting here reading your post, I’m glad to hear that you have made the decision to better yourself. It sounds like you have overcome and beat the odds. You’ve already proved to yourself you can do it. You will always be the judge of what exactly “it” is moving forward. I’m rooting for you.

There are some extremely knowledgeable guys on this board that constantly share health/fitness/nutrition info and lift each other up as you will see if you haven’t been browsing here already.

I’m not into CrossFit, but I personally feel like you would really benefit from the type of energy and encouragement those places and members have for each other.

What did you have done to repair/fix your shoulder?

Sorry to hear about your situation and I wish you the best of luck. You don't sound very far off in terms of weight reduction desired. Cleaning up your diet will go a long way, I'm sure. If you have the cash it might be advisable to get an ortho or physical therapist to evaluate your ROM and other stuff to see if there are any precautions you should adhere to.

Crossfit is very dynamic. I definitely recommend some sort of consultation before jumping into that. I don't know if those dynamic movements pose problems with scars, for example.

If you have the cash, I would talk to a doctor, physical therapist, and see if they can line you up with some 'advanced' physical therapy / trainer type - not the 5lb weights and let's get you better after wrist surgery type of deal, but a full plan to get you to your full potential, working individually with you or in a small group, working with and around your limitations. Some time with an expert might be worth it, before going off on your own.

If you don't have money, maybe reach out to some support groups, do internet searches, and see what you can learn from others.

If you're a Veteran, go to the VA for sure and see what you can get as far as assistance and information.

Wish I could offer you more than this. Good luck, man.

I see two potential pathways if you choose CrossFit:

1.) You get injured as the classic overzealous new Crossfitter with existing injury prone areas. Your specific “box” and coaches are a big variable.

2.) The community and connections you make by joining CrossFit result in huge physical and mental health improvements. You make big progress getting back into shape and make lasting friendships.

Suggest you “interview” your nearby locations and ask about their onboarding programs and how they help new members avoid injury.

This is good advice. I’m not familiar with CrossFit gyms but I assume there is a lot of variation in what they provide.

How old are you, OP?

Congrats to you. Sounds like you’ve taken the first steps.

Weight lifting and cardio can give you the results you want if CF is too hard on the shoulder. You can modify weight training for your shoulder, not sure if you can do that with CF.

*All this is assuming your have your plan nailed down for your diet. Diet is what’s going to make or break your goals, not exercise.

You can always scale any workout. A good gym will encourage it.

Just know your limitations and I think you will be fine.

People hate on Crossfit a lot, but a good gym can be a great time and the environment can really foster a more healthy lifestyle.

I miss my gym a lot.

It depends on the Crossfit box you attend, an how good the coaches are.

It's been a long time since I did Crossfit, but some of these coaches attended a 3 day class to become certified. So, some will be able to work around and with your injury, and others may just give you a cookie cutter program with the rest of their clients.

My suggestions, or at least what I would do in your situation, would be to join a regular gym first to see what I can and cannot perform on my own. Build up basic strength, then reassess. You may become more capable than you think right now.

PT
By the time my burns healed, bone had grown around the shoulder and boxed it in. Nothing they could do to repair it

Thanks for the suggestions and the positive messages!

Going to do an evaluation session with a trainer to see if we are a fit

Your shoulder issue complicates the situation enough that I don’t feel comfortable giving much specific advice. Well, except to say that CrossFit would not be my first choice.

And I wouldn’t take the advice of any one “trainer”, either.

I’d probably pay for a consultation with someone from Barbell Medicine or similar.

At 40, it’s time to be strength training.

OP glad you made it through to the other side. I think CrossFit could be great for your situation but physically and mentally but not all CrossFit locations are the same.

I may have missed it but where are you located?

As far as your shoulder injury goes, what was the diagnosis given by the doctor? Heterotopic ossification?

That’s a tough one

CrossFit is for people with shoulders that work that want to mess them up not for people with already messed up shoulders

Exactly
Very rare in shoulders. Extreme high impact injury caused it

Do it. A good CrossFit gym with solid coaching/community will keep you motivated after the shine of your goals wears off and the grind sets in.

If the gym you join is run well they will help you with mobility and if you think that will hold you back scale until you fix it. I also think a GOWOD subscription would help you or getting into a PT clinic to diagnose the issue.

No chance of an osteotomy trying to correct it at all?
