Has anyone made their own cold plunge out of a chest freezer?

I’m trying to find one that has a large enough depth (from wall to front of freezer) without being ridiculously long.

Why not a bathtub?

I’d just try one of those $100 ones off Amazon.

Look for deals on FB market place.
Seal it on the inside on all seams/corners
Tap/seal a spigot for easy draining to clean as needed. (Optional or get a submersible pump)
Make sure to unplug it when you use it and plug back in after.

To kick-start your first plunge, add 40lbs of ice after letting it chill overnight.

A bathtub isn’t ideal for a grown man.

I'm 6' and can't fit in my master bathtub which is pretty big.

To get the full benefits you need the water much colder than a tub can offer and I don’t want to go buy 30lbs of ice every morning or after training each time

Theres a page on instagram called DIY cold plunge. You can buy plans from him and build a nice one. However it'll still run you a decent penny based off the chiller you purchase.

There's also DIY builds on youtube of course.

Interesting. If using a freezer do you plug it in? Will it cool the water? I know my coworker was looking at some deal with a chiller. I don't know much about them.

Pondering the economics of purchasing a decent commercial type ice machine vs. building a chiller.

Purchasing ice on the daily isn't sustainable to me.

Pretty sure I heard Andy Galpin talk about how cold plunges/baths can prevent hypertrophy. Might want to read up on that anyone wanting gains.

Not prevent but possibly slow down. Possibly.

OP, the vessel is the cheap part. The chiller is what gets you. For the record, a $1k half a horsepower chiller is not going to keep up with this heat.

Commercial ice makers aren't cheap either but at least you'd have more than one use for it. But they aren't small. Or quiet.

I have 1/3 HP chiller that is struggling to keep below 60 in this heat. That’s with 100 gallon tub in the shade. But it’s been over 100 degrees outside for weeks.

And 59 degrees still feels amazing compared to cold water from the tap, which feels warm after 10 minutes in 59 degrees.

I don’t believe any of the bro science for or against cold plunges. I just know I enjoy it and feel better.

Yeah you use the freezer to cook the water then unplug it before you get in so you don’t get shocked if there’s a short

100% grind them to a trickle.

LINK to meta analysis review by menno

quote:

Cold plunges reduce muscle growth, new meta-study finds A new meta-analysis preprint of 8 studies concluded that cold water immersion after exercising blunts muscle hypertrophy compared to not suffering in ice water. Cold essentially slows down the body. It reduces the rate of chemical reactions, it slows down blood flow and it suppresses the immune system. Cryotherapy has also been found to impair muscle anabolic signaling and muscle protein synthesis. These are all undesirable things when recovering from a workout (or an injury). Short cold plunges or showers can be great to give you a quick shot of mental energy, but prolonged cold is best avoided post-workout. So what should you do after a workout to recover? Go home and relax. You've done your job. Now let the body heal. The GOAT recovery strategy is arguably Netflix & chill.

Cold plunges and cyro are dumb imo unless you are just looking for mental edge or mental alertness. Pretty much been shown to be useless for hyperteophy, recovery, etc

Now sauna on the other hand is really good for overall health

Advil too. The muscle needs the inflammatory response in order to grow.

I think if you do a cold plunge every morning as a part of a routine, which a lot of these folks seem to be doing nowadays, then you’re avoiding this issue.

I'll look for the video I found, but I saw a guy do it online by getting a used chiller from best buy for a majority of the total cost, built a frame, insulated, and sealed for I believe just under $500. The chiller is the bulk of the cost.

Other video I saw included one of those large gameday size garbage cans and filling it with frozen water bottles. If you freeze the water bottles and never drink them, you can use that as your ice. Buy a pack from Costco for $5 and freeze all the time. You will just use up a lot of space in your freezer.

Even those who say it diminishes hypertrophy say it is fine to do before lifting or if you wait 6 hours after lifting.
