Ive had a disc bulge for the past 3 years and every time I try barbell squat it re-aggravates the pain to where I can’t walk. This has been going on for several years and it’s killing me. Anyone on here who have successfully rehabbed from a disc bulge?

Rehabbed, yea, twice. Gone back to barbell squats, big no. My first was in my neck. Did PT and all the funny exercises and stretches. Got a standing desk. Then about 2 years later got a slight bulge in my mid back. Went through PT again for that. Probably a year ago. I keep it to low impact exercises mostly. I’ll still do a little running but I’m not putting weight on my shoulders to work my legs.

I takes a long time for bulging discs to heal. Look up Brian Carroll. He is a McGill’s practitioner and one of the most decorated powerlifters ever. He has material that can help you. But for the time being, stay away from the things that cause pain.

Just don’t squat, deadlift, or leg press man. It’s not worth it.

Where is it at?

I'm going through this right now. I have 2 herniations in my L4/L5 and L5/S1. I had a microdiscectomy 8 years ago and it worked but now my sciatic pain is back. I refuse to believe that i should just give up squats and deadlifts entirely. I've tried rest, a few rounds of prednisone, McKenzie style PT, traction machines, the McGill method, targeting the piriformis, yoga, etc but none of it has worked. Meloxicam helps mask the pain but it comes right back a couple days after I quit taking it.

I'm currently going to a new PT who is doing a lot of dry needling, hip flexor stretches, and glute activation exercise. I've been on that for about a month and I'm feeling a bit better this week but it's hard to say yet if its really helping. Hes had me squatting and deadlifting with an empty barbell. For the past 3 months my strength training has been all unilateral movements. Im using a lot of bands cables and dumbbells instead of barbells. Lots of lunges and split squats.
I added weight to a barbell for the first time this week, nothing crazy just 65-95 lbs.
I've definitely gotten a lot more range of motion in the leg with the sciatica since I started going to this PT so I am optimistic, but I still have a lot of pain when trying to sleep at night. Being active helps. I got a treadmill and walk throughout the day as much as I can. But everyone is unique. I've read accounts of so many people having success with the McGill big 3 and several of the other methods that I tried, but they just didn't work for me. It's just gonna be trial and error unfortunately. I'm thinking the next thing I'm trying is one of these healing peptides - either BPC 157 or TB-500

Damn, man. Good thoughts sent your way. Which location was your micro?

It’s at L5-S1. It’s a 3x8mm disc protrusion that, according to the radiology report, approaches the sacral nerve but doesn’t press on it. I opted to not have any surgery and just let it heal on its own. From what I’ve read, disc bulges don’t reabsorb like herniations do because there isn’t anything for phagocyte cells to eat up. When a herniation occurs, annulus pulposus oozes from the disc annulus into the spinal canal. Over time, phagocyte cells will eat the leaked contents up which will clear the disc herniation. Any exercise involving axial loading on the spine like the barbell squat is a no-go for me now

Everyone is different but I’ve worked out with a herniated disc at L5-s1 for years. Make sure you engage your core with every exercise. Don’t go heavy , start light and work your way up and find that tipping point. Stay within that range .

Front squats and kettle ball squats have worked best for me, just accepted that I can’t go heavy.

Here you go brother…unbelievable that I didn’t know about this until this year after watching an Amazon documentary about Westside Barbell…it’s amazing and I was scheduled for a fusion.

I also have the L4/L5 issue. I only do exercises where I am straight. I do light weight front squats with barbell (from rack). All exercises from the floor are now off the table. Initially, I continued with cleans and dead’s from the floor but about once every 3 months I would hit the wrong angle and I couldn’t walk normally for a week or longer.

Bottom line is I can still get great workouts even if they are different. I bought an echo bike and rower and those 2 have helped me mentally get over the loss of my “normal” routine. I do a lot of thrusters (barbell from rack not floor) and it’s amazing how jacked I’ve gotten by doing lighter weight, more reps, and concentrating on form so I can walk the next day. You just gotta be careful. On a side not, every once in awhile I use a hex bar to do deads just to get that feeling back. But then when I pinch the herniated area I remember why I gotta leave it alone.

Yes, but it's different for every person.
L4-l5 since 2007 still squating. I lay off heavy deadlifts though. Been about 2 years since. That what seems to get me.
