if you do squats at all watch everything you can on YouTube about form
Follow this advice. Also, here is a book someone posted on here a few months ago. I bought it and studied it and realized how bad many bad habits I'd developed with my form iver the years. Has tons of information in it.

Thanks for all of the advice so far. I have worked out before. In fact, during Covid, a buddy and I would go to the local gym every morning for an hour. He was a workout fiend so he taught me proper form on lifts and what not. I just haven't lifted consistently in 2.5 years.
I am starting with walking and diet. Got 12,000 steps yesterday and was under 1800 calories. This morning I had coffee and a protein scoop, and for lunch I packed 8 oz of chicken and 2 tablespoons of salsa.
Tonight I am going to figure out my max on all the lifts for Grasshopper. For my wife she will just start with the bar.
My lower body is in good shape. I play tennis 7-8 hours a week and give lessons so am on my feet consistently. My calves are strong, but I can definitely beef up my quads.

yea for learning the squat, you should be learning the low bar squat as taught by Mark Rippetoe. Especially as a older guy. if there is a starting strength coach in your area, go see him too to learn the lifts.

If you’re struggling to find motivation to work out I wouldn’t recommend a home gym
A lot of times I’ll go to the gym to see if my friends are there or if there are any honeys to look at. If things are good I’ll have a good workout and if not then the workout won’t be very good. It’s all about the baby steps

My wife is nuts (aren't they all) so we will be working out together. She will hold me accountable.

I realize you love posting almost believable easily trolling responses on tOT, but this is not tOT. Sometimes people come here looking for legitimate advice, and someone may read one of your stupid posts and take it seriously and it negatively impact their life. And while I'm sure that won't bother you, it should.
As for the OP:
I started with Grasshopper as a complete novice to lifting and weight training. Ran the first 4 weeks using just the bar to get used to the lifts and watched multiple youtube videos about perfect form and advice for each lift before during and after while learning the basics to each set. then re-ran the first 4 weeks using 100lbs as my training max. Then ran the second 4 weeks slowly increasing the weights by 5s each day until i found a very challenging but doable training max.
Most of what I've read shows you hurt yourself when you try to push that last rep of too much weight and your form suffers and you tweak something. I'd rather slowly build strength and form than egotistcially go too hard and jurt myself.
I am currently in week 7 of Grasshopper with my figured out training maxes and plan to do SuperSet after.

The dude already has a home gym and he’s not using it
Commercial gyms are fun and they only cost like 20 bucks a month. It doesn’t hurt to mix it up sometimes. And you might make a friend

After the inauguration several jbe lookalikes started showing up to my gym. I’m guessing jbe’s body doubles got laid off and lost access to the government gym

I got downvoted over my reply on thw smith machine, but that's one of the reasons I built my home gym. All they had for squats was a smith machine.
And it was always tied up with dudes benching, pressing, or curling.
A smith machine sucks for squats and I blame that for my bad form I developed.
I do miss some of the other equipment they had.

How the heck am I gonna get 200g of protein in a day?
I usually find myself going over my 219g protein allotment every day, which I'm fine with considering my carb and fat splits.
In between my lean red meat, the occasional chicken, cottage cheese, and protein powder mixed in my cottage cheese, it's super easy to get 200g of protein in.
To the OP, don't discount CrossFit. If you stick with it, I can assure you that you'll get in shape. I love CrossFit mainly because you just need to show up and the programming is done for you. If you start counting Macros along with an exercise program, you'll really get in damn good shape.

A Smith Machine doesn’t really suck for squats. In fact you can hit the quad differently on a Smith moving the feet slightly forward which can be difficult trying to do that conventionally in the rack. I always blew the Smith off until I saw Cutler doing this version and his legs obviously were/are jacked. Still.
