Went and got another VO2 and lactate test done today. Used Samford University here in town instead of the place I had been going. Honestly, I wanted a second opinion on my results. Glad I did.

The professor of sports physiology runs the lab and is assisted by some grad students. Facility was nice, dude was very professional and extraordinarily knowledgeable. Highly recommend them. It was also very reasonable at $250 for both tests and it’s covered by my HSA.

They confirmed what I suspected. My VO2 is still at 51 as it was 3 yrs ago. My last two tests had shown it increasing by 5% every year which shouldn’t be possible given my age and physical condition. Not sure if that was technical error or what. Lactate threshold was at HR 160. Basically confirmed by zone 2 of 135-145 and my threshold at 155-165.

Hit a new max HR today at 198. Honestly felt good and probably could have pushed through another minute or two. Wonder if I can hit 200 at 52 yrs old?

Go get tested.

Do they do lactate blood testing or is it based on your max HR? I know some guys who prick their ear or fingers during workouts to do the Norwegian style lactate testing but I don't have a need to get that in the weeds. It's a really cool system though and it seems to be working for the world's best runners

Yeah. Dude had a lactate meter and had a protocol for testing. Think they did it 8 times or so. Run, hop off the treadmill for a test, then back on at a higher speed for the next level. It leaves no ambiguity: zone 2 is 135-145, threshold is 155-165. Zero doubt. Easy to build a plan around that information.

On another note, I've been using the Morpheus app which measures HRV as a determiner of your HR zones and time spent in those zones. The lactate zones matched almost identically the Morpheus zones.

Ran a local half today. Treated it as my normal Saturday long run. Did my zone 2 with new increased HR and mixed in some 1/4 mile threshold intervals. Organizers had Wild Turkey shots at mile 12. That was different.

Reporting back on my trail half. Ran the Armadillo Dash Trail HM in Norco by the Spillway on Saturday. Managed to grab seventh overall and first in my age group with a time of 1:59:33.

The course is on a single track mountain bike trail, obviously not much elevation but lots of switchbacks and tree roots. Had to run one 5k loop then two 5 mile loops which resulted in the course running long by nearly 0.70 miles and I felt all of that extra mileage lol.

Felt great the first two loops, kind of settled in with some good groups. Attempted to pick the pace up a bit for the last loop but bonked hard for the last mile. Plus my shoes were killing me, definitely needed a half size up on the Speedland GS:TAM. I never get blisters but came away with two on my left foot. Already cleaned the shoes and will be offloading them soon.

All in all, really fun race that I’ll try to do every year. I thought race production was good, trail was marked well, wish they would’ve warned us the course runs long and wish the weather would’ve been cooler. Post race was great with live Cajun music, unlimited Urban South beer, burgers, jambalaya, and some other snacks.

On was also a race sponsor and they had the Cloudultra 3 and Cloudultra Pro for demo. I didn’t use them for my race but wish I would’ve in hindsight. Was telling tbe On rep how I love the Cloudmonster Hyper and have multiple pairs, dude ran to his car and comes back with the Cloudmonster Hyper 2. He let me try them on and I cannot wait for that release. They look and feel amazing. Basically a road going Cloudultra 3.

Nice run! Glad you enjoyed the race put on bad Lazy Hound. I’ve known the RD team for years and know they care about having happy runners. Course distances can be difficult to be exact. RD has made many contacts in the industry so I wouldn’t be surprised to continue seeing sponsors like ON at their races.

If you want a trail shoe to try pick up a pair of adidas speed ultra. I really like them.
LINK

Can save some money and get the non plated version but the $40 difference is worth it to me based on having both. The new version will be out in the spring. But that’s $220

Honestly have no complaints. Makes sense it’s tough to get course distance exact on a trail, plus everyone else had to run it too lol. Lazy Hound seems great, good vibes all around and as you mentioned the sponsors were awesome.

I do like all the Adidas shoes I’ve tried so far, trail shoes would likely be no different. I don’t need another trail shoe currently so just gonna wait a bit. I have an old pair of New Balance Summit Unknown that probably would’ve been a good shoe for this race. I also have some Diadora Siestre XT I use as a casual shoe, could push those into running service if needed.

Struggled big time in the turkey trot this AM. I donated blood on Tuesday. Tapped out of my tempo run on Tuesday night because I couldn’t keep my HR down. Figured I’d be good today, nope. First three miles I was fine, but felt like someone pulled the plug on me at the turn. Got on the struggle bus and went into just finish mode. Long time since that has happened to me. First race this year that I haven’t PR’d.

Lesson learned. Still a great time and one of the biggest races in Bham. Tons of people and a great time.

That’s impressive! Well done!

Making me feel terrible ??. I’m training for my first half and was happy to get 10.5 in 2 hours on road Wednesday. Goal is sub 2:15 half by mid January, but I have some work to do. I’m not a distance runner by any means, but I’ll get there. Now that Thanksgiving is over I’ll drop some extra pounds to help with my overall pace .

Thanks! It was a really fun race.

Did the New Orleans turkey day race pushing the double stroller yesterday. I did the “right” thing and started toward the back as they ask stroller pushers to do. Whew…big mistake. Basically walked the entire first mile, spent the next 3.5 weaving around traffic. If I do it again next year, definitely starting up front. Seems more dangerous to do what I did vs starting at the front. Ended up finishing in 44:02.

Day off today and had a sitter so knocked out 13 miles. Ended up signing up for the same HM I’ve done three years straight…so trying to really work up mileage. I usual max around 30/35, trying to hit 32/35 consistently and peak around 45.
