I am getting a new garmin watch with music. I do not want to use earphones for safety reasons. Any recommendations for a small lightweight speaker i could keep in my pocket while running?

Get a pair of Shokz (previously known as Aftershokz) headphones. They sit in front of your ear and conduct the sound through your jawbone so you can still hear your surroundings.

I don't know who makes it, but I've seen advertisement for a small bluetooth speaker that pins to your shirt.

I run with my phone strapped to my arm and play music out of my phone speakers for just that reason.
I am sure I annoy other runners/walkers but I am past them in a few seconds so I figure it's a mild disturbance.

My recommendation is to stay away from other people. Hearing someone's crap music coming through their crap speaker is really annoying. That goes for restaurants, public transportation, the gym, stores, etc. My biggest pet peeve is those that need to listen to a podcast ridiculously loud as they walk through a wooded trail. Noise pollution.

Yes, get a small speaker and hopefully nobody else will have to listen to your taste in music.

I run down rural roads. No one is going to hear any music I play. I just want to hear cars driving behind me.
