I’m just getting back into working out gained a good bit of weight after discharging from the Military. Should I be doing more cardio or lifting or a combination of both

I would do both but I’m not sure what the science would say. I would lift first and then hit the stair master or later in the day go for a run.

I did lots of research, asking lots of people. It was best for me to trim down then build muscle on a lean frame.

I was wondering would that be best for me. Did the weight fall off easily for you

Hop on the Soflete programming bro. They usually recommend strength program then stamina. Swap each one every 8-12 weeks when you finish a program cycle .

Yes. The first 10 pounds or so of water weight fell off in about a week. Leveled out, changed some things up, lost 42 pounds total. I will say this, I didn’t know to get in 1g of protein per 1 lb. of current bodyweight daily so I know I lost a TON of muscle.

In terms of importance
1) diet- be in a caloric deficit and prioritize protein
2) lift- lift progressively. Suggest starting with a linear progression program
3) cardio
4) neat- aka walking

I've had great success with fasted daily walking in my mornings. I started at a relatively easy step goal and have steadily progressed.
I also strength train because the two together is a great combo, so I would add my vote to the "Both" pile. I lift later in the day. This is what works for me currently.
I think it is most important for you to figure out what methods will allow you to be the most consistent and go with that. Even if you aren't doing "the best" program or plan, or whatever, if you are consistent you'll see results over the long term.

5) don't take body comp advice from a guy whose user name is peewee Jr.
Do the above or if you can be super dialed in try tracking your macros while lifting progressively and try to slowly increase cals while watching the scale (reverse diet) then cut later once you've built some muscle and have your maintenance cals pretty high. You won't lose a lot right away but you'll be better off in the long run

This is what I did minus the protein because I was new and didn’t know.

It depends on so many factors. For one, what’s your timeline for trying to lose weight? What are your top two fitness goals? I would personally take it slow and focus on consistency. If you focus on gaining muscle right now that will increase your metabolism and make it easier to lose weight down the road.
