I've Been Replacing Sprinkler Rotors the Wrong Way

I've probably replaced 100 sprinkler rotors, but according to this YouTube video I've been doing it wrong.
The video recommends using a gardening ("hori") knife to cut a 4" deep donut-shaped hole around the rotor, then pouring in some water to soak in and solidify the soil before turning the rotor to remove it.
This gives you a cavity that won't collapse and clean exposed pipe threads when you remove the rotor.
Who knew?

This seems like a lot. Do you work in irrigation?
But I sure need to work on my irrigation system.

I do it this way. then you need to spend the next 20 min making sure its spraying the correct area

the a-hole that installed mine put in all toro heads. i wouldn't gaf except for the fact that the toro heads are about 1/4" less in diameter than rainbird and orbit. meaning i have to dig a big ol hole the down to line to get the new ones in there. every time i have to do it i inevitably spend an hour.

Plus I find irrigation work more fun than interior plumbing because any screw-ups are easier to fix.
ETA: "I've bought a lot of properties" means I'm old AF and bought each of them to live in.

Lot of ball busting but IMO that's a solid tip OP
ETA: I guess I should maybe use thread tape? But I have an issue now where a couple of my heads rotate like 10* and I need them to be dang near perfect or they overspray or underspray. What I can't understand is I put them back to where I want them and then they rotate just that 5-10* and stop, they don't keep rotating. Its like they want to be in a certain position and give me the bird if they aren't.

Anybody whose ever installed a new sprinkler head that didn't work properly because the filter screen was clogged with dirt.
