Dallas here. Back yard has been wrecked by dogs and sprinklers failing.

Going to re-sod myself, have a huge oak tree in the back that is full cover of about 50% or the yard, the rest is full 1/2 day sun.

Have St Augustine in the front that has done well, should I stick with that or Zoysia? Which is better for shade and some dog traffic. (Will mitigate the dog issue with a walkway on their normal path, they steers clear of most of the area I’m sodding).

Also getting sprinklers fixed to maintain regular watering.

Hi Dallas. Zoysia hands down overall. Especially in “Dallas if that’s where you are.
Shade? I wish I could give you a perfect answer. I’ve tried pieces of Empire and Palisades under a couple of water oaks and they slowly faded away. St. Augustine gave a better result, albeit still a little thin.
Zoysia producers almost always exaggerate how well their variety performs in shade.

St Aug isn’t a well adapted grass for N TX IMO.

It’s finicky to begin with, prone to fungus issues and doesn’t like your winters.

For me it would be Bermuda or Zoysia.

I am not certain of my variety of zoysia, but it does beautifully under the light shade in the minimal spots I have shade. I have a hard time with proper watering in full sun positions.

Not sure about st Augustine but I know that no turf grass will do well in full shade.
Zoysia is better than tiftuf or the best shade bermudas but only in a way that it will completely die off in 4 years as opposed to two years. My neighbor is trying to thin out a beautiful live oak to try and keep his zoysia but it seems like a bad idea.

I have Palisades zoysia in my front yard which I love because it looks nice and it doesn’t require a bunch of water or fertilizer. My parents have Empire zoysia which has a smaller leaf blade than Palisades, and it’s a nice cultivar too. I hear El Torro is a good shade tolerant zoysia that doesn’t require a ton of water to stay healthy. To me it looks almost like Empire zoysia. Zoysia is a weird grass in how they classify it. The three I mentioned above have a similar leaf blades as centipede, but it’s far superior and prettier. Recently I was at a sod farm and they had what I believe was called Emerald Zoysia and it had an entirely different leaf to it. Man alive it was pretty. Looked more like a nice hybrid Bermuda you would see on a golf course.

Can't speak to shade but I sodded 18 pallets of palisades in my backyard last year and it is the most full and plush yard I've ever seen. It feels like you're walking on a cotton cloud when you're barefoot. I have to mow it twice a week or I'll end up cutting off more than 1/3 of the length if I mowed it once a week.

Does anyone have dogs? Zoysia seem to hold up to their traffic? Figure St Augustine is probably one of the more traffic sensitive grasses.

Mine generally have a defined run path around the perimeter which I plan to work around with crushed granite.

I have some patches in my backyard. I think it's Zenith. It holds up better than St Aug or Centipede. I think I like it more than the bermuda but there is no stopping the bermuda from taking over.

I have 3 dogs but I'm also on 2.5 acres and they run on probably 1.75 of the acres. Having said that, I don't have any blemishes where they run or lay. They do tend to lay in the same spot off the side of my back patio and it takes longer to green up in the spring but once it's green, you can't tell where they lay.

Bermuda is a bitch to keep out of the zoysia. If you keep the zoysia healthy it'll choke out the Bermuda but I have a couple of splotches of Bermuda that drives me insane.
