I am getting tired of my Samsung’s ‘quirks’.

I don’t have space for one of the large / restaurant style units (need roughly a ‘standard’ size fridge).

Thanks in advance!

Subscribe to Consumer Reports. The same manufacturer can make fridges in different plants. Sometimes it's individual features that cause issues between product lines. The only thing you can nearly count on is that Samsung's ice makers will break, but everything else is variable.

I always heard good things about Whirlpool but I just replaced a 4 door Whirlpool that was only 5 1/2 years old. Bought during Covid when prices were really high. We liked the extra slide out refrigerator door in the center. The Whirlpool’s functionality was great, but it just didn’t last. We found another Whirlpool we liked but just couldn’t bring myself to buy another after only 5 1/2 years. I ultimately went with a cheaper LG and it definitely feels cheaper made than the Whirlpool but it also has more space than the old Whirlpool. Several salespeople told us to just find something that’s functional because none are made to last. All of the sales people told us to stay away from Samsung though.

What failed? If not three compressor then it was likely an easy fix. The fans fail often but they are cheap

I've had nothing but success with the Whirlpool family of products. I was a Maytag guy prior to them being bought out by Whirlpool. Still like Maytag stuff even though it's under the Whirlpool umbrella.

For standard 70x36 fridges, GE Cafe, SKS, Frigidaire Pro, all day

For Built-ins, Subzero no doubt

I've had "cabinet depth" Maytag French-door 6 years without problem. Like other French-door model I've had it will need part of latching mechanism and a door gasket replaced soon...easy DIY. Went to that shallower body due to limited space. It's fine for 2 people w/ occasional guests.

I have one of the fancy samsungs with all the gadgets and you can change the glass panels out to a different color. Fully expecting it to break but for now I'm really enjoying the two different types of ice

I'm a Whirlpool fan but recently had an independent appliance repair guy tell me that in the 18 years he's been in business he's had only 2 service calls for Bosch refrigerators. He, like another service tech I knew before we moved, said that Samsung and LG account for over half of their business.

the Frigidaire I just bought is a tank. It is well reviewed and I’m certainly happy with it thus far. My advice on appliances after having spent the past 20 years installing them on commercial jobs is this

-no connectivity
-no touch screens, soft buttons or any other circuit controls (or as few as possible)
-as few moving parts as is possible (for example, no ice/water dispenser)
-heavy is better
-bigger is better
-if there is any plastic parts other than decorative, move on. Ditto on glass
-buy from an appliance dealer not from a home improvement store and certainly not from an online dealer unless they are a commercial dealer like a refrigeration or kitchen supply dealer

Honestly I didn’t take the time to figure it out. We had just gotten groceries for the week and it started going out Saturday and knew for sure after church Sunday afternoon. The refrigerator was like 55-60 degrees but the freezer was going back and forth between about 10-30 degrees. I thought about keeping it and putting it out in my shed to try to work on later but I’ve got way too many things like that that I just never seem to have time to work on. My wife kindly reminded me of that when the Lowe’s guy asked if I wanted them to take my old fridge away.

Our 8'ish counter depth kenmore elite just gave up the ghost. Hasn't made ice in the last 3 years.

Agreed…I have had a Frigidaire pro for 20 years now without issue.

If you buy whirlpool make sure it is a gold model. The swoosh in the logo will be gold vice silver.

I like the simple GE refrigerators without any extra features. Traditional "top freezer" seems to be the best design. Perhaps not for ergonomics, but for durability and performance - yes.

Make sure you allow adequate space around the refrigerator for it to get enough ventilation and keep the intake area clean of dust that builds up.

Seems obvious, but you'd be surprised how often people kill their appliances by just not doing that.

I have a kitchen aid cafe classic. I lost three screws from the freezer drawer within the first two weeks of owning it. Would open the freezer and a screw would fall out. Still doesn’t close well without a good push. May be a lemon, but can’t get excited about it for the price. It’s 3 years old and I am fully anticipating the day it decides to kick the bucket.
