Willie Gay is in Starkville, 20 minutes from the Mayhew campus (almost an hour from the Scooba campus where the players are). His brother is a huge proponent of his and someone Willie leans on for advice, almost like going out to lunch with a recruit's parent to convince them that LSU is the right choice. Not as far fetched as you seem to think it is.
Edit: also if he flew into town, he likely would have flown through GTR which is 5 minutes from Mayhew campus
