Agree 100% and much much risk. The blending is the key. FSU went 12-0 one year doing it then 2-10 next. You still want consistent top ten recruiting classes but now you can fix any deficiencies or add the missing pieces.
LSU has two Heisman winners through the portal which gives us huge portal cred.

On the other side, players particularly from smaller schools, coaching change situation can show they can play against NFL caliber players and compete for a championship, play on national TV each week and get huge exposure uping their draft status.

That's what I was implying. Can't be too pissed about losing Keys when you can add 2-3 experienced starters who immediately help.

Never was. Blessing in disguise, IMO.

Give me a Haulcy or Delane over an unproven Keys any day.

Is it fair to say Underwood decommitting freed up some NIL monies that allowed us to bring in some of these impact transfers

I mean it did but that is overplayed. They spent 18 mil on the roster.

Underwood was only getting 1.5. So it probably helped you add a guy like aj haulcy and maybe another lesser player or two.

18mil divided by your top 53 guys is 339k each. Obviously some guys get 1 mil but supposedly a guy like daniels last yr got around 350k. I think daniels was the player Kelly was talking about when he talked about telling that player they should leave for the money.

Miami probably close to doubled it.

The transfer portal is far superior to high school recruiting. I'm pretty sure the stats back me up on this as far as LSU is concerned. Go look at LSU's hit rate and production from the portal versus high school recruiting since 2022 or 2023.

When we factor in the amount of time and effort it takes to recruit high school kids compared to transfers, then it becomes even more one-sided.

If LSU had unlimited money and the coaches had their way, then they would only recruit a very select few from the high school ranks and the rest would be portal additions.

As for recruiting from other programs' rosters, it's easy. LSU doesn't have to actually (and illegally) recruit the players. They just put their list of position needs out to the agents and the players come knocking. It's free agency every day all day.

Inconsistency is the problem.

Spot on. I don't really think we have the qb we want for next season, though I will admit if I'm wrong. So do we ride with who we got and see who develops, then add via portal guys for 27 ?
The problem is not the QBs, the problem is LSU fans and media not understanding there is still development to be made. Van Buren was a true freshman last year and he's being developed under a new system, with different coaching and an entirely new set of pass catchers he has to develop chemistry with. Hurley is literally what you'd consider as a true freshman as he got here a year earlier than any QB should. He also got into that wreck that set him back.

Well LSUs had 2 Heisman QBs in the 4 years and it didn’t do shite for our QB recruiting and that didn’t mean crap !!! It’s all about the money these days and nothing to do with being developed. It’s just a sad situation what’s happening to college football.
While I agree with you, there will be no way to deny LSU and QB development if Nuss becomes the 3rd heisman and 3rd top 5 QB pick in 8 years from LSU. Also, it will show that you can develop more than just transfer QBs that spent 3 years somewhere else. Nuss is a 5th year senior with qll years coming at LSU.

Plus, people keep forgetting that it wasn't just money that swayed Underwood, it was an insane amount that no other school would likely pony up. Bryce hit lower first round pick contract money.

The crazy part will be getting used to your team not being "all in" every year. Like this year for LSU, the QB is here and a solid group veteran players. So you go out and spend the scratch to be elite. Other years that won't be the case.

Yeah next year seems like it will be a "see what some of these HS recruits can do and assess what we need for 2027" type of season.

there are definitly a a few models to do this.

The 1 round has plenty of 5 stars and plenty of guys out of nowhere

if you can’t grab the 5 stars out of high school try and grab the guys out of nowhere.

This is my biggest takeaway I think Kelly has learned that you have to pay to get QUALITY players in the portal but it definitely pays off on the field. This defense has literally been transformed in one off season.
