O is at his best when he can be a DL coach and a personality on the recruiting trail. Outside of that, you’re asking for trouble.

Don’t think he’s had much of an impact at Florida but he should be good depth

There probably won’t be anyone in the portal who can unseat our top 4 lineman, so anyone good enough to get some snaps is an improvement and will make us better by keeping our top 4 fresher. We need at least one more multi-year DT as we are losing a lot next year.

He’s a good kid from a great family. They are hard working people. I’ve done a lot of business with his Dad over the years and call him a friend.

His family was upset when Bill Johnson pulled the scholarship, and are excited to have their son home.

Jalen has a lot of of upside. If he puts his nose down, and goes to work, he could impress a few of you.

I personally believe LSUs new S&C program will do wonders for him, plus being closer to family! They are a close nit group!

I wouldn't expect us to take Lee if he was, and it sounded like he was more likely to go to Ole Miss last thing I saw.

I kinda don't think we'd take both, even though I guess we could.

Nice comments Shabath... these are the kids it is easy to be for bringing in... good local young men from good families that you just know are going to come back home and work like hell to be a contributor.

This is why it makes sense to target LA guys who want to come home in the portal. Lee wanted to be here before and we will likely get his best effort in development, which doesn’t always happen with hired gun transfers. Who knows, maybe his ceiling is a bit higher than what many expect.

Lee is a guy who can fill snaps for you, and you do need that, but he's no better than 4th in the rotation behind Smith, Wingo and Guillory

everyone needs to understand that this addition is not simply what statistics can Jalen Lee put up. Rotation is key for defensive linemen. If this allows Wingo to take a breather for 15-ish snaps, and both Lee and Wingo can now go 100% for their snaps...everyone gets better. after this year, we should all realize that the big guys wear out. additions like this allow those guys to go full blast.

this is a win for the good guys.

Is that the word?

I feel like they would take them both

We need both. After next season, all we would have left is Guillory. We need these guys to bridge the gap.

I don't understand this at all. We were about 4 DL short this year and likely lose Roy and get Smith back, so we are in the same situation. We need to add at least 2 in the portal and maybe 3 or 4, even if they are just for depth.

The defense was worn down at the end of the season.

This right here says it all. I really felt like we were worn out by the end of the season on the defensive line with little rest for the starters. Even if Shand goes elsewhere there will be more in the portal after the bowls. We seem to be doing a nice job targeting what and who we want. And no matter what we are way ahead or this time last year.

The issue is that both Shand and Lee are juniors.

So conceivably yes, they could come in and rotate for a year and then start afterward.

But Smith will be a redshirt sophomore likely to go pro and Wingo will be a junior in his money year.

Given what Kelly said about wanting to build with freshmen, taking a couple of juniors who are at best two and done, it doesn't fit all that well.

And yeah, I know the response to that is beggars can't be choosers, but we don't know what the coaches might have going behind the scenes on defensive tackles who might flip late or will be available for the February period. He might get on some people he likes out of high school then.

If there aren't any other options other than Lee and Shand then sure, take both. But just because we don't know of any doesn't mean Brian Kelly doesn't.

wanting to build with freshmen

How's that going?

Not a single high school commit.

I'm not mad about it. shite happens, but that's what the portal is for. We need at least a couple of players who can play immediately to provide rotational depth. Unless they think there is a freshman coming in that can do that, the two things don't seem connected.

And regarding Kelly's comments about the portal. They were a nice sound bite and probably made people feel good that LSU wasn't going to be "Portal U."

But I think we can all agree that it was bullshite. LSU signed around 15 portal players last year and will likely sign 10-15 this year. Probably slightly less, but not significantly.

I'm sure he WANTS to build with high school players, but in situations where that isn't possible, he will have no choice.

Also, we are at the beginning. There will be players in the portal all the way until the deadline in May.

Maybe he was never happy and his heart wasn’t in it at Florida? Perhaps, he’ll develop university and state pride it takes to motivate him to preform at a higher level. I’m excited about him coming home. I believe he is going to valuable at a position of need. I’m optimistic about Jalen Lee.

Jalen never wanted to go anywhere but LSU. I think he will be a solid addition.

In case you don’t know, he was committed to LSU but Orgeron pulled his offer along with that of Major Burns bc we had “silent commits” and all that Bs about not having room for them.

Of course the silent commits will forever be silent bc they never happened and we pushed out good kids who could’ve been helping us the past couple of years.
