Still to this day don’t get why OU didn’t put more effort into blocking the punt on the final play of that game. They had all 11 guys at the line but the rushers mostly looked like they were putting the same effort in getting to the punter on that play as they would for a regular return situation in the middle of the game. All out block situation and nobody got close or even tried to lay out.

It was like none of them had even seen varsity blues

Game was much closer than it should have been. Had a turnover at the OU 2. Vincent should have scored on the opening play. Blocked punt gave OU a two yard drive. We made a FG late third quarter to go up 24-7 and double penalties resulted in losing that score.

Every touchdown for LSU happened in the wrong end zone from me.

Did you move during the game?

Green and Spears scored in the same endzone. Vincent scored in the 2nd in the other endzone.

I remember watching OU during the season as they ran up the score on some weak team and the announcers were talking about their greatness and dominance—when one of them stated something g like ‘It seems pretty clear that everyone else is playing for 2nd place against this OU team’

Though the score wasn’t indicative, I loved how we dominated that game.

Lionel Turner with the late game sack to seal it

That was one of my favorite plays ever made in the history of LSU football.

Keltic Tiger: A friend was having breakfast with Saban & other TAF'ers the morning before the game & Saban made this comment " "they (OU) have no idea what's about to hit them"

On one of the numerous Baton Rouge TV shows highlighting the build-up ot the game, they showed Nick Saban dancing to a James Brown song at one of the pregame festivities. My father-in-law immediately said, "If he is that relaxed, this thing is over."

GarmischTiger: Stoops getting chippy with Lynn Swan about the number one defense comment at the half made me know he was rattled.

As I understand it, Vincent's run on the first play reversed the stat, making LSU the top total defense and OU never took it back.

I remember ESPN having a long story about the advantage OU had because Antonio Perkins was the #2 punt returner in the nation. His great returns created hidden yards that would put OU ahead in field position all game. Only at the end of the story did they mention that Skyler Green led the country over Perkins.

The next year, their O-line was hailed as the greatest ever. USC kicked their arse.

I was there with my dad, a core memory for sure. Oddly enough I went to the game very confident. I remember thinking the score was much closer than the game felt. Awesome time man, what a season that was.
