I just read that...is there something in the water at LSU ? this is ridiculous how many top players that LSU was seriously counting on are getting injured. This guy was going to be really important for LSU this year.

Christ, Gaines may be the worst offensive basketball player I’ve ever seen

I think ideally Williams would have redshirted but thats out the window now. He is a scorer. He is a real good athlete. Very quick. Has a nice shot. I can see him getting 12-15 min per game. He should be a viable scoring option off the bench. Murray will have to start. He is probably the best shooter on the team. His game should adjust well to the college level. He is built a lot like former Tiger Hi C Carter. I can see Murray getting better as the season progresses. He is definitely a pure shooter.

You must not have seen Tim Quarterman as a freshman. He and Gaines had a lot of the same issues with taking contact and shooting because of their weak frame. TQ was taller but Gaines has elite speed and is already a very good defender, his offense will improve after a year of strength and conditioning. If we have trouble at the 2 Pinson can be moved and Gaines will likely see more time at the point.

LSU doesn't win game 1 of the SECT without Gaines. He was huge vs both Ole Miss and Arkansas that weekend...then didn't play much vs. Alabama.

We'll have to see what the newcomers can do, but Gaines is probably the best playmaker on the team (steals/defense, court vision, etc). His problem last season was just wild inconsistency because he tired to make a highlight play every possession vs. just the necessary play. If he has matured a bit as a player he could start to make a bigger leap. Hell, Mays was kind of an out of control player in his freshmen season. He then matured as a player all three seasons after and became an All-SEC player who is now on an NBA roster. NO ONE would have predicted that after watching his freshman season.

It's not ideal that he will now have to play more minutes when LSU was expecting to have a veteran backcourt. But it means Wade is going to have to find other ways to win. Maybe with Gaines at PG you become more of a pick and roll team than you thought you would be with Pinson/Miller. Maybe you change your defensive approach a bit more because you have a guy in there who can get steals on his own. The injury to Miller hurts...big time...but LSU now just has to find a different way to make it work.
