Looks like first scrimmage with shitty playing conditions where neither the pitchers nor hitters felt comfortable.

Okay, this
Makes me feel better about this
Even if you aren't slipping your plant foot, the thought of slipping your plant foot fricks up your control

This is very true and very unfortunate.

That is true. That’s how it is easy to tell the people who know a thing or 2 about baseball from the people who are just on here to form quick opinions on something that is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
That is also referring to Jones, not just Cam.

Well that just ab tells it all. Great stuff but can he command it.
That doesn’t tell anything. 1 outing in the first scrimmage of spring does not tell the story on what the kid can do. You can forget about what he did in fall if you want just so you can make a comment like that though.

Jones is a whipping boy on here. I don’t get it

It’s also the fact Bear is facing one of the best pitching staffs in the country. In his part of the PC yesterday he even said “iron sharpens iron”, he could go .225 these scrimmages and you still can’t take much from it until you see a good portion of the season.
I personally love him and hope the K% goes down a little and is not so much feast or famine, but shitting on him after the 1st scrimmage is stupid as hell and outs yourself.
Edit: Also excited to see DJ Primeaux, Guidry said his slider is maybe the best pitch on the staff and we will see him a lot

He’s going to strike out
He’s going to walk
He’s going to hit Nukes
He’s going to play a good 1B
They just need to deal with it

I hope we see the Kling we saw in non conference for about 3 weeks last year. He was the hottest hitter on the team at a point last year. He hit like 600 for 3 weeks iirc

Several fans overstate their concerns. A more sober and measured response is that we have several players who need to take that next step - Kling, Jones, Neal, Guidry, etc - for us to repeat.
One of the more obvious ones is for Jones to cut down on Ks. I think his swing is pretty compact as is even though he's a big guy. Maybe it's patience? Mental? Dunno.

I kinda disagree. I actually think it’s impressive to give up 5 baserunners in only 1.1 innings without giving up a run. Yeah, the 4 walks is not sustainable, but he clearly was able to harness his stuff when he had to and get Ks with guys on base (don’t know the sequence of his walks/hit/Ks, but my early Saturday morning math thinks he had to have at least 1 K with the bases loaded and another with 2 on—could have been more). That’s a huge weapon to have in the back of the pen when a guy can come in with runners on and get strikeouts when you have to have them.
Assuming he stays in the pen and the walks yesterday were an outlier, I think he pretty obviously becomes a multi-inning closer who can come in and clean up high leverage situations with guys on base in the 8th (and maybe even 7th) and then finish out the game. I don’t think you have to save him to start and close a clean 9th, and he’s too good/big/extended to only use as a high leverage LH specialist to get 1 or 2 outs. At least in the postseason. May not need him to go multiple innings too often in the regular season if the pen is as deep as it seems.
Tl:dr—5 baserunners in 1.1 is not great, but his ability to get Ks with guys on base is a much bigger positive than the baserunners are a negative imho.

I'm not calling out Scuba or saying that his stats are wrong but Cam did walk in a run with the bases loaded. In his 2nd inning of work he started off by giving up a hit to Travinski with a runner starting the inning on 1st. He threw a pitch in the dirt a couple feet in front of the plate that allowed the baserunner to advance to second. Then finally, two more walks before the inning was called. In a real game situation there would have been no run scored since the bases start empty but walking them loaded can be concerning.
I'm not worried about this outing at all but he struggled with a bunch of close pitches being called balls and several in the dirt. Could just be a product of pitch calling to work on his secondary pitches and a wet mound causing delivery issues.

This team to get where everyone wants them to go need Jones, Kling, and Neal to be everyday starters.

Thanks Scuba for the report as always. Helps make the Tiger world go 'round.
Question: did they play 5+ innings or did others pitch some that aren't shown. The innings pitched don't add up to 5+. Or is it just some quirk about how CJJ is formatting the scrimmages?
Posted on 1/27/24 at 11:53 am to AlwysATgr
It's really hard to keep score and calculate stats as normal due to the format that CJJ uses. That in addition to him calling innings and limiting pitch counts makes it real hard to make everything add up accurately IMO.
Kudos to Scuba's patience and willingness to compile this for the fans who can't make it out to the Box for the practice part of the season. TYFYS Scuba!

yeah just poorly worded by me i guess. helps to know ab the mound conditions and his fall performance. certainly not making any sweeping assessments based on 1 appearance

Scuba,
I'm having an amnesia moment.
What is the random number on the right hand side of some of the player's name?
For example, "RF Frey 0-2 K BB 3" What does the "3" mean?
And for Roelig, "2nd Roelig 0-1 8" What does the "8" mean?
I'm sure it's something simple but my brain isn't clicking this morning.
Thanks as always for your attendance at the scrimmages and for the box scores. Nobody does it better!
