The Pistol!!
For substantiation of this opinion, please read and enjoy the book, "Maravich". Many great NBA players say that he was the best player that they ever played with or against. Many greats who came after him admit that they were unable to do the things that he did.
"Maravich" is a great read!

Ben McDonald....played basketball and baseball at LSU, better at basketball coming out of high school but wasn't that great at LSU. However he was a pretty decent baseball player....

Easy call, he was wayyyy ahead of his time.
I agree with this.
Just a note on Cannon: He would later run the 100 yard dash in 9.4 seconds and throw a 16-pound shot put 54 feet.
9.4 in 100 yards---FAST!
I think, 100M = 109 yards.

I surprised that more LSU fans don't know the great athletes of our past. Cannon was awesome and in the top 3-4. Tommy Casonova was far more skilled in my opinion. Sports Illustrated had him as the presean Heisman favorite in the early 1970 (71??). At the spring game he was safety (which by the way which he played for the Cincy Bengals 5-6 years and all pro a few of those) and played TB and had 150 yds rushing. He had a major hamstring pull that fall and played the last 1/2 or 1/3rd of the season. He could have played any sport and would have excelled. Went to Med school and became an opthalmologist. When I trained at Charity Hospital , I remember the nurses falling over each other to say "hello" to him ( I am still jealous of the sucker.) Mike Miley might have been even better. Graduated (my dates may be a little off) from East Jeff, NO, in 1971 and played behind Bert Jones (one one has mentioned him.) for two years. Returned punts though. Took over QB in 1973 and led a surprise LSU team to 9 staight wins. Was a stud at short stop on a average LSU baseball team and left the school when drafted by the Angels and did not play his senior year at college. The football fans were devastated. Started on the Angels at ss in the 1975 (??) season but was so so. Tragically died in a single car accident in Baton Rouge on I-10 a few years later. A unbelieveable athlete.

I can't believe it took this long. Most are too young to remember Cannon. He was the Bo Jackson of his time.

Lyle Mouton- baseball and basketball. Made a pretty decent living in professional baseball, didn't he?

Cannon hands down. Guy was blazing fast, as big as an o-lineman (in those days), and threw the shot 60+ feet!

Mike Miley was the reason LSU decided to run the veer in 74...but he signed with the Angels, and the also late Carl Otis Trimble ran it pitifully.
Miley actually died in a one car accident on Highland road after visiting his baseball coach, Jim Smith.
Anybody remember DeWayne "the astronaut" Scales? Tremendous athlete...got noticed in Dallas by Ron Abernathy when he jumped OVER a defender at the foul line for a dunk. LSU wins the NCAA Tourney in 81 if Scales stayed in school imho.

Scales was awesome, but LSU had so many great B-ball players then (remember Cookie-man?) they were a dime a dozen. Again my top four in order... #1) Cannon, #2) Pistol, #3) Casonava, and #4) Miley.

Are you talking athletic ability + athleticism or how good he was at a respective sport?
Posted on 7/11/08 at 9:51 am to Louie T
honestly although pistol was extremely talented he was not the most athletic. honestly you all sound like you are reaching for some of our more famous white athletes. by all accounts chad jones could end up being one of the best athletes to grace lsu's campus.

Tommy Casonova.. the best natural athlete by far. #2 Mike Miley
Nope. Billy Cannon. Big guy (215 lbs) who ran track (4.5 - 40) and played danm near every position on the football field. Cannon scored everyway you can score in the game of football (running, receiving, passing, kicking, interceptions and fumble recovery).
Posted on 7/11/08 at 9:53 am to MissStateBoy
Mike Miley should be up at the top.
