I'm not arguing with you about that. I believe its much much harder to win a basketball NC. That should be weighted. But a regular season conference championship shouldnt be weighted over a baseball NC.
Agreed

Anyone think of a fair way to determine which SEC athletic programs was the most successful program of this decade? Granted we might want to wait and see who wins the SEC or BCS this year but where do things stand at this point?
Well a good way - since you are talking about SEC programs - would be to take all SEC sports and for the decade in question assign points to finish in the SEC. 12 for first, 11 for second and so on and then add up the numbers.

you pretty much have to include all sports that all SEC teams play to determine the best athletic program of the decade.......I don't see the need for it to be weighted either, this isn't a popularity contest, no sport should be shown favoritism over another

Interesting. I just have a hard time justifying that a title in swimming and diving should equal a football title. But hey, that's just my opinion. It just seems the revenue/publicity reveune sports that drive athletic programs would get a little more clout in my book.

Tell that to Paul Maineiri and Skip Bertman!

I guess part of my reasoning is that I'd love to see LSU have a legit shot at winning the Sears Director Cup. Stanford has claimed the title for 14 consecutive years and winning national titles in obscure sports and having them count as much as the major sports is part of the reason.

Florida has won 19 of the last 22 SEC All-Sports Trophy.

Link? I wasn't aware that a Bernie Moore trophy was still given out.

But the SEC regular season basketball champions is in no way greater than a CWS and national championship for baseball.
I think that CWS title is better but the nation doesn't. I doubt that most SEC fans would weigh a baseball NC over a basketball SEC championship. All you have to do is compare the revenues of baseball and basketball for each SEC program. I doubt it's even close.
For most programs it's football, basketball, baseball, then the rest. There are obviously some where the order would be slightly different (i.e. Duke, Kentucky, Indiana, etc.), but baseball is still third at best. If this were an ACC discussion, Final 4 appearances and NC in basketball would probably be weighted closer to BCS bowl appearances and maybe even equal to a football conference championship.
In the SEC, however, it is clearly football, basketball, baseball, then the rest. Where it gets sticky is trying to compare the value a national championship in one sport to an SEC championship in another.

Maybe it shouldn't, but it is.

Nationally speaking basketball and baseball aren't even comparable in terms of popularity.
Are we talking about popularity or athletic excellence? LSU has 13 national championships already this decade in the top 4 collegiate sports. Florida has 4. I would still say Florida is in the top two because their programs are strong across the board for men and women.
Arkansas actually has more national championships than Florida, all in track and field.

Isn't it Great just to be a legitimate entry in the discussion?
WOW....just Wow!
I can remember (late 60's, 70's) when LSU was considered a solid Top 20 program (across the board), but now, to be in the discussion for one of the Top 5 or so programs in the country, much less the SEC....well, we've come a long way!

We all know that football has the most attendance but then you get to basketball and baseball it gets real close. You have a great Baseball team like we did this past year, there where more attending the baseball games than the basketball games and weigh the softball team to the basketball team in women's and you would find that would be close also.

lsu has 2 in baseball this decade champ, and how bout you ad bcs bowls to that. lsu has 4 of those in their back pocket, more than florida
The year 2000 was last decade, this decade ends after next year. Do you start counting at 0?

The only thing that matters is football.
Basketball garners a bit of interest when they do well.
Baseball garners a bit of interest when they do well.
I didn't start following either until the postseason.
In any case, if you're talking best athletic program in the SEC, football has to be the foremost measuring stick, with those two as a sense of support.
Most important though, I would think that a graduation rate of athletes that don't go pro after their junior years would be of paramount importance. Athletes aren't gladiators for our entertainment... colleges have a foremost importance of getting these guys a diploma. That should probably be counted higher than anything.

you've taken a poll? Alot of people could care less about basketball until the tournament. The tournament is the thing about college basketball that gets attention and gets people involved. Unless you watch Duke/UNC and those classic rivals which are all over rated.
Since your name is "Stromile Swift" i'm guessing you are just more of a basketball fan.
you can't actually think college baseball is as popular as college basketball
