Walking or sliding down them is disrespectful, would damage them severely (think dead grass, heavy rain, erosion-it's happened before), and would enforce the stereotype of "ignorant Louisiana."
It's a fricking mound of dirt with grass on it. It's not going to erode away b/c a few kids slid down it 8 times a year. and if it did erode a little bit, then just put some more dirt on it. It's not some ancient burial ground, so i don't know what you're talking about is disrespectful to be on them. They don't even know what the hell they were for. It's just guesses as to why they are there, as well as many more of them all over the state.
Acting like they are some historical significant building is so silly. It's just a mound of dirt. It's not a pyramid, or stonehenge or some other marvel of engineering. It's just a small mound of dirt. I played on a mound of dirt by my house as a kid. We rode our bikes up and down it. That was 30 years ago. It's still there despite kids riding their bike on it for 3 decades.
There's nothign disrespectful about enjoying the piece of history that is a mound of dirt, and maintaining that mound of dirt by occasionally adding dirt to it to maintain it's appearance isn't a big deal. The mound is simply a symbol of what it once was. It doesn't need to be protected like it's the leaning tower of Pisa.

The LSU Indian Mounds may be the oldest existing human structure in the world.
Nah just the dirt from when Huey dug the Natatorium

I'm just going to have to be okay with not allowing kids sliding down them.
Next you'll be saying they shouldn't let kids slide down the pyramids.
They should build new mounds for the kids to slide down. Hell just take the debris from Middleton no one uses (you know, the books), pile it up and throw some dirt on it.
Voila, new Indian mounds.

Lots of butt hurt in this thread. Should we call them the Native American Burial grounds so nobody gets their feelings hurt?
Doubling down on stupid is not a way to go through life.

Those Indian mounds are over 10,000 years old, and considered the most ancient artifacts in North America.
They are piles of dirt. And I consider myself An expert on dirt piles as I grew up with one on our property, probably three times the size of those hills that my dad built.
The only damn hill in Prairieville. We slid down it, we rolled down, we rode down it, we played it on it, we had firework wars on it, we had bonfires on it. Didn't hurt it a bit. I remember we Would get into old tractor tires And roll down it that was fun.
There are no Indians Buried in that hill. There were a few dogs and cats buried in ours at least. There is nothing particularly spectacular About a pile of dirt. It's not disrespectful to walk on it anybody that would get mad about you walking on their hill as long, long, long, dead rotten and disintegrated.
It's Pansies like you that ruin a fun thing and fun memory for people for no goddamn reason. The bollards were sufficient.
People that think foot traffic and playing on the hills with somehow damage the dirt should be slapped in their cocksuckers. You don't know shite from Shinola.
The dirt that was piled there wasn't any more special than any other goddamn dirt. Hell, it wasn't older Either the same old dirt is still around.
Pile up some new mounds and let the kids have a little fun or just tear down the stupid fences.

Oh you are such a smug ninny.
The only thing that made the Indian mounds worthwhile were being able to enjoy them. How many books have been peacefully read atop them? How much laughter, how many smiles? Memories handed down?
Truly, they are just dirt, but the human interaction with them made them magical. Lying on them, looking up at the stars. Atop a pile of something old as dirt, gazing up at the same stars our distant distant ancestors would have.
And our ancestors would have wanted us to enjoy them and use them.
Not wall them off and make them useless, for NO REASON AT ALL.

It's pretty obvious. They built them for their kids to slide down, their teenagers to have dates on, their adults to gaze up at the stars on and their elders to tell stories about how fun it all was.

“ Woke policies led to lsu protecting the mounds”
This term confuses me sometimes.. I understand the dei aspect but explain to me how historical preservation of something thought to be older than the pyramids is woke…?should we allow vandalism of monuments such a Statue of Liberty.. Mount Rushmore .. ?

You have a bunch of LSU geologist .. seismologists.. and archaeologists that have a lot of data and science that differs from your opinion.

How about you educate yourself?
Did you read that and educate yourself on it?
What did I say was inaccurate?
Is it a burial ground? If it was, then yeah i'd say stay off of it. But it's not.
Do you know what it's purpose was, b/c neither does that site other than just some guesses. Do we treat the other mounds just like it throughout the state the same way?
Is it some special dirt or something?
There is literally nothign special about it, and ther'es nothing of signficance underneath them. They are literally guessing at how old they are and their purpose b/c there isnt' a shred of actual evidence to give any clue as to when or why they were formed. For all we know some baw in the 1700's could have dug that hill for himself so he could sit on top of it when it flooded.
It's just a mound of dirt. Yeah it's got some cool and mysterious history behind it, and we can still enjoy it and embrace it's history while kids slide down it a few times a year.
Just stop acting like it's some precious artifact that is going to disappear b/c some kids slid down it. "uh uh uh the vibrations from the cars nearby are going to make it crumble......" I mean good god how fricking stupid is that? vibrations from cars are going to tumble a fricking 20 foot dirt mound covered in grass?

This doesn't provide any real reason why they need to be fenced off.
A small pebble! Golly gee we better hope some kids walking on the dirt didn't damage some other possible pebbles.
Should we prohibit people digging on the mounds? Sure.
But some kids playing king of the hill and sliding didn't hurt the dirt at all.

Excavations have revealed the northern mound is composed of hard clay dirt, while the southern mound is more porous. A few artifacts have been discovered in the mounds, including a small pebble that was used as a tool

None of that says with any sort of certainty what they were for or when they were formed.
I"m not trying to shite on the Indian Mounds, literally or figuratively. They are cool, and we should respect them by simply recognizing their mysterious history.
But it's stupid to fence them off and not let people walk or play on them pretending as if they are some sacred burial ground that will release a poltergeist if we step on them, or that they are going to get destroyed if some kids slide down them a few times a year or if cars keep driving on the road next to them.
