Ive got Walton a close second to Alcinder as far as college centers go. Walton had a complete game, no weakness.

Shaq was a much better pro than college player. Dude fouled way too much and had not grown into his natural physical ability at that age. Chris Jackson was a dominant college player who didn't come near Shaq in the pros - but IMO they were not even comparable as college players.

CJ had far better skills than Shaq did. Chris was smaller than basically everyone he played, and nobody (until Gary Payton in a pre-draft competition made for TV) could handle him at all- raining 3's, blowing by his man whenever he wanted to, getting alley-oop dunks (the shot, not the pass!) a couple times a game.

Shaq just used his huge size advantage to kill people, like he was (literally) a grown man among boys. I'd say Ewing was better in college, and maybe Olajuwon too. At least the equal.

Jose Vargas was the greatest college basketball player of all time.

But seriously--Pistol Pete's stats will never be touched.

Now I can't argue against the fact that Chris Jackson was obviously playing against a much better caliber of athlete than Maravich was. I mean it's pretty obvious that when an entire race of people is excluded, then the talent pool will be watered down.

Could you imagine an all Jamaican hockey team because Whites aren't allowed to play? Feel free to laugh.

Plus, I'm not old enough to have actually watched Pete play--kind of like I'm more of a Walter Payton guy instead of a Jim Brown guy--because all I know of Brown is his stats and highlights.

But I also think that Pistol, from the highlights I've seen, would have had much the same success against post segregation's caliber of athlete. However, I think he would be more on the level of a Steve Nash--which is by no means chopped liver.

Truthfully, the best college basketball player I ever personally witnessed was Len Bias. That dude dominated the college game in every aspect.

I have a friend (Texas fan, if that matters) who claims that Chris Jackson is the best college basketball player ever. I say that he isn't even the best in LSU history, I'd take Pistol Pete or Shaq over Jackson. Thoughts?

(Texas Fan, if that matters) - Yes it does because that dude is crazy not to say Pistol Pete was not the best ever at LSU! No three point line and he still ripped up the league with 44.2 PPG for three seasons...game, set, match!

Choctaw, you are 100% correct. Pistol Pete was playing today's game 40+ years ago.

He was the best ball handler, passer and dribbler this game has ever seen, college or pro. HE was the greatest player of all time.

Even the Harlem Globetrotters wanted him.

With the 3pt shot, he would have averaged an astounding 57 pts per game at LSU.

Let me think...

All-time leading scorer in NCAA Basketball history...

Or ingrateful jerk that refused to stand for the National Anthem?

Not. Even. Close. Pistol Pete was the greatest.

There's nothing wrong with him stating a fact about his ancestor if it's true, that's no reflection on the poster.

Back to the OP, CJ I think gets the nod over Shaq. Pistol took over a game every bit as much but the game was different then, players weren't as good or physical trained, etc.

The way he just took over a game was truly amazing.

Chris may have had the ability to take over a game...however...Pistol was the game! Better yet, Pete took his game to the NBA and was named one of the 50 best ever. End of story...end of discussion.

I'm sure this has been posted, but I'm not reading all 5 pages.

the best 3 college players are Lew Alcindor, Pete Maravich and Bill Walton. Any order really doesn't matter.

Jackson was better at LSU than Shaq.

it certainly does. he could have moved on from the slow white boy league to the black league. but i think once they realized he was just a slow white guy they rescinded their offer.

maybe lew alcinder really wasn't all that good then b/c he played against a bunch of "slow white boys" from around the country. by the time bill walton came around, more teams were integrating and thus he was just a great slow white boy.

Both Chris Jackson and Mr. Pete Maravich were the two top players at LSU. I don't agree with CJackson's religious views, but I respect his right to have them and I do not think less of him for his views.

Chris Jackson was by far the best freshman of his era. He would even put that James Fredete player of BYU to shame. He was better than that white boy who played for Duke (who nows plays for Orlando Magic). Action Jackson was the real deal..better than O'Neal. He was the best shooting guard I ever did see. The best !!
