Yeah, he's a better pure Shooter. So was Larry Bird. And Rick Barry and Rich Mount. Perhaps Calvin Murphy. But none compare to Pete as a passer or ball handler. No one does.

No, but it's just my opinion. Nothing wrong with having differing opinions. Heck, I loved watching Ernie D at Providence, Earl the Pearl with the Knicks. All incredible, just my opinion that Pete was the best. Pete was the originator. Others watched his game and learned from him. Perhaps my youth in Pete's days colors my opinions. He was something we had never seen.

For a college player to break his scoring average they would have to make 15 3 pointers a game for their entire career. Not gonna happen. And Pete didn't have a 3 point line. Pete over Curry any day.

Curry 77 consecutive 3s.
I rest my case
He went 94/100
When my dad was younger and living in Nola, he said Pistol, who was playing with the jazz, used to go to the Y and shoot with all the kids.
Said it was the most amazing thing he's seen. It was shocking when the ball hit the rim, much less didn't go in

Actually, when Dale Brown charted Pete's shots in college, he said he AVERAGED 13 shots MADE from 3-point distance. So, potentially 57 points per game. Pete only played with the NBA 3-point shot his last year with Utah and Boston. He was coming off knee surgery and did not start for either team. It is a small sample size, but he was 10 for 15 that year. So, yeah, 66.7% is fairly good! Curry is great, but Pete was the best.

Outside of Curry, people don't shoot as well as they did back in the day.
I think they also played better defense in the NBA back in the day, but that is just my opinion.

I understand where you guys are coming from, but Pete's era vs Curry's era . Who would win? Without a doubt we all know its this Era. Way tougher competition.

You were also allowed to use your hands back then, and the lack of 3 point line should have hindered Pistol's game
It goes both ways. How good would Pistol have been throwing passes to today's athletes? His game would be improved in today's game?

Curry is a better shooter. Maravich was a better all around player. Better passer, better defender. I never saw anyone pass like Maravich since Bob Cousy. Cousy #1. Maravich #2. All time. Cousy inspired his teammates to be like him.

Anyone who thinks Pete didn't match the ball handling skills of Curry, Magic or others obviously knows very little about how great he was - shall we also mention that the guy was double and triple teamed throughout his career and be always had a target on his back because everyone's goal was to figure out how to stop him more so than to win the game. And Pete never played on a team that provided a great supporting cast. He was "the show" and he rarely failed to deliver. I'm surprised he wasn't awarded Hall of Fame status for the Harlem Globetrotters - no greater ball handled or passer than him!

If you did not see him in action ( Maravich) you just don't get the breadth of his body of work. The no-look passes, the passes between his legs, the passes to guys who were closely guarded. It was a lot of fun to watch . I was at the game where he blew out his knees, he was having an EPIC season that year he was doing things that were downright unbelievable. He was nailing shots at a torrid pace.
That being said, I think Curry is on his way to being a better shooter.
Maravich was magic on the court...we are not likely to see a player wit that type of ability again

Larry Bird was a great shooter too

1) Is there a primary source for this, or is it just an urban legend that Brown did/said this?
2) Brown is prone to hyperbole.
Edit: upon further review, this is totally unrealistic. Maravich averaged 16.7 field goals made per game in college. If Brown ever said this (I'm not sure he did) he would be suggesting that roughly 78% (13/16.7) of Maravich's made shots in college were from 3 point range. That is completely unbelievable.

I want to say Maravich but stats don't lie. I will say i saw Pete in college and no one was ever better at that level. Curry seems to be on his way to being a little better in the long run as a pro. If only Pistol could have enjoyed the 3 pt line. Awesome Player, Man and Tiger. RIP

Maravich put up 68 on Walt Frazier, arguably the best D guard of his era. He was the best play creator of his era. Whether his accuracy matches Curry would be debatable, but his overall play-making and creativity was better.
Curry is as accurate from distance as I think we'll ever see; Maravich was extraordinary with men all over him, but I don't think he was as fine of a pure shooter as Curry.
