CJ shooting 33% didn’t help playing Dennis Scott and Kenny Anderson
Not enough defense against another loaded team.
Part of the reason college ball isn’t as good as it once was with 3 year players on teams every where across the nation.
NBA ruined it and NBA sucks anyway without any defense as well.

You still wouldn’t have seen anything with that group. They were really underperformed as a group. If you would have seen Pistol or 79-1987 teams, then you could have gotten a glimpse of why the Assembly Center was named the Deaf Dome.
The 79-80 team would have whipped every LSU team including those that went to the final 4 with Scales and Rudy playing. Instead we got our asses handed to us by Magic Johnson in his run to the title with Michigan State. They do not beat us with Scales and Rudy. No way on earth that happens.

Yes he did.

Only partly true. Shaq had almost no offense in college save for a dunk; however, he was an almost unstoppable beast defensively and on the boards. Combine that with the fact that he could virtually dunk at will and I don’t think you can overestimate his talent or production.
All of that being said, I found Stanley more fun to watch bc he was more polished offensively (although ultimately not on Shaq’s level).
ETA: Shaq’s ball handling, vision and passing ability was crazy good for a 7 footer (let alone a freshman 7 footer)

I was there 84-88 and I agree with you (except for the Pistol part…he never played in the Assembly Center). Regardless, That place was crazy.

Well, I guess so. Freaking old age. I sort of forgotten we played in Parker when I was in school. Don’t get old! Stay young!
Here is an interesting fact:
When mike was in that small cage while they were building the Assembly Center, the construction workers used to poke at him. I heard one guy kept doing it with rebar they used to set the foundation for the AC. He would sneak through the tall grass and poke him. Mike caught on to it and would growl at him before he ever got close enough. Smelled him.

It was amazing watching him play. He just dominated the court. I remember watching that moment live in the video vividly.
His Junior year (in the video) is when all teams went to the Hack a Shaq game plan. Whenever Shaq was in a position to make an easy layup, shot, or slam, they would hard foul him. Because his free throws were awful, they wanted LSU to beat them at the foul line. It pissed of Shaq and LSU fans immensely.
That video of Shaq getting pulled down was the last straw, and he had enough. This was his 3rd to last game in an LSU uniform. To this day I think Dale Brown charged the court and player because he knew he lost Shaq to the NBA at that moment. Shaq was tired of the cheap fouls, and let it all out in that video.

Wtf. His freshman year he was still trying to find himself. His soph and junior years he was all that and then some avg. around 26 ppg, 5 blocks, and 14 rebs plus breaking rims in my lifetime he was and still is the most dominant college player I have ever seen.

Watch this video. This game introduced him to the world as the best collegiate player at the time. With Chris Jackson gone to the NBA, this was now his team, but was shoved in the role earlier than normal. He destroyed the court.
This video is basically the cliffs notes on how he played every game against opponents. They had no answer until Hack a Shaq.

I camped out on the ramp at the PMAC for those games back in the day. My memory of Shaq's game back then has faded but I do know he was the most exciting player to watch. Only Zion has been as interesting as a player in college since then (to me).

Well, that season (1989-1990) I watched them beat Loyola Marymount, 148-141 in OT. I also watched that team beat the eventual national champs, UNLV, 107-105. Those two games were the most fun I've ever had at ANY basketball games in my life.
I think that you should amend your statement. We all know that they underachieved and that Dale Brown made tremendous coaching blunders, but there was PLENTY to see.

Shaq loved to dramatically swat shots up into the seats until someone finally taught him it’s better to block them with a little less force so LSU could get possession of the ball.
Dude was so much fun to watch.
Us being such a non-basketball school thought is was great when he did that.

Looks like Jamie Brandon didn't show up. May have made a difference. he was a very highly regarded recruit out of Chicago.
